eSIM for Caribbean

The plan covers 25 countries and territories, and the honest breakdown is 17 in the Caribbean itself plus eight on the South American mainland, so the word Caribbean in the name is doing some heavy lifting. Read the list before you assume.

The 17 Caribbean entries are Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, the Caribbean Netherlands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Small territories that often get dropped from a coverage list are on this one, including Anguilla, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands.

The other eight are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. French Guiana is a French department sitting on the South American continent, not an island, and it is grouped here for network reasons rather than geographic ones. If a country name is not written on this page, it is not covered. A coverage list is a contract, not a wish.

Cuba, the Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Trinidad and Tobago, the US Virgin Islands, Haiti and Martinique are all absent, and several of those are exactly the islands people assume a Caribbean plan will include. Check your route against that list first.

Cuba deserves its own warning. ETECSA is the state telecom monopoly and its mobile brand Cubacel does not issue eSIM profiles at all. Foreign eSIMs reach Cuba only through a roaming agreement, very few brands hold one, and several large travel eSIM companies quietly dropped Cuba and never restored it. If Havana is on your itinerary, this plan will not help you there.

The Dutch and French splits catch people out. Caribbean Netherlands means Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba only. Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten are separate countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and they are not covered. On the French side, Guadeloupe and French Guiana are included while Martinique is not, even though they share a flag, a currency and a mobile operator brand.

Plans start at $4.20, and the best rate anywhere in the range works out at $6.29 per gigabyte, which is the most expensive per gigabyte of any region we sell. Caribbean data is genuinely dear and no provider can wish that away.

A price starting at $4.20 tells you almost nothing on its own. That is the cheapest ticket, not the cheapest data. The smallest, shortest plans carry the worst rate per gigabyte in the whole range, and the largest plan is where the $6.29 figure comes from. If you expect to use more than a couple of gigabytes, buying up is cheaper than buying twice.

The reason is structural. Every island is its own licensed market with a small subscriber base, and almost all traffic leaves on undersea cable rather than on land. Wholesale rates follow that reality. When you compare us against the big brands, compare price per gigabyte for the amount of data you will actually use, and ignore the number on the badge.

It works in port and on the islands, and it does nothing at all in open water, because ships hand you to a maritime satellite network that no travel eSIM can join. Buy your data around port days, not around trip length.

Signal usually comes back 30 to 60 minutes before docking, as the ship moves back within range of land towers. In practice you are often online over breakfast, well before the gangway opens. Expect to lose it again within roughly the same window after you sail. Nobody selling you a cruise eSIM tells you this, and it changes how much data you actually need.

Your itinerary decides whether this plan is worth it. Eastern routes with frequent port calls give you plenty of usable hours ashore. Western routes with long sea days give you very few. Add up your hours on land, then buy the smallest plan that covers those hours. If your route calls mainly at ports that are not on the coverage list, this is the wrong purchase and the ship WiFi package is the honest answer.

For a physical local SIM in the Dominican Republic, yes. Law there requires prepaid SIMs to be registered against a passport number in person, and staff photograph the buyer holding the SIM. An eSIM installed before you fly skips that queue completely.

This is why the airport SIM counter in Santo Domingo or Punta Cana is slower than travellers expect. Staff copy your passport, register the number to your name and take the photo, so nobody can collect a SIM on your behalf either. Land after the counters close and you have no local option until the morning.

Registration rules differ island to island and change with little notice, so treat the Dominican Republic as the example rather than the rule. The general point holds everywhere in the region. A profile that is already sitting on your phone cannot be stopped by a closed shop, a missing photocopy or a queue of forty people off the same flight.

Across the islands you will usually land on Flow or Digicel, and on the Spanish speaking islands and the mainland it is more often Claro, Altice, Movistar or Orange. The plan uses local networks in each country rather than one single roaming partner.

Travellers consistently report that Digicel holds up better once you leave the main towns, while Flow tends to be strongest in cities and resort areas. Saint Lucia is the usual example. Coverage is solid around Castries and Rodney Bay and gets thin on the east coast and the mountain roads. Plan hikes, remote villas and inland waterfalls on the assumption that you will drop offline for stretches.

Here is the fix for standing in an arrivals hall at midnight with no bars. Turn data roaming on, wait ten minutes, and if there is still nothing, go into network selection, turn off automatic and pick a partner network by hand. After a short hop between islands, phones often sit stubbornly on the previous island's entry until you force a rescan.

Do not buy this plan for a single island trip. If Barbados is the whole holiday, buy the Barbados country plan and skip this page. A regional plan earns its price when you cross borders, and paying regional rates to sit on one beach is money thrown away. There is no unlimited Caribbean plan here, none at all, and we are not going to pretend one is coming. There are seven plans and the largest tops out well short of heavy use, so if you edit video, run video calls all week or work full time from a villa, buy a local SIM on arrival or budget for top ups. If you are on a US carrier and Puerto Rico is your only stop, check your existing plan before you pay us anything, because US carriers generally treat Puerto Rico as domestic and you may already be covered for nothing. And if your route is built around the islands we listed as not covered, walk away from this page rather than hoping.
