eSIM for Paraguay

An eSIM is a SIM card that lives inside your phone as software. There is no tiny plastic chip to pop out and no tray to fiddle with. You buy a data plan online, your phone downloads it, and you are connected.

Think of it like buying a movie online instead of a DVD. The data plan arrives by email and installs in a minute or two. Your normal SIM or number stays in the phone, so the eSIM just sits alongside it as a second line for internet only.

For a trip to Paraguay, this means you can land at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asunción and have working internet right away, without hunting for a shop or handing over your passport at a kiosk.

You do not need to choose Claro or set anything up. Once your eSIM is on, your phone finds Claro on its own and you start using data.

In Asunción, Ciudad del Este near the Brazil border, and Encarnación down south, the Claro signal is solid. You can stream maps, video call home, and load shopping malls and restaurants without trouble.

Out in the Chaco, the huge dry plains in the northwest, coverage thins out fast. The same goes for remote stretches near the Jesuit Mission ruins at Trinidad or quiet roads between small towns. You will get signal in the towns themselves, but expect dead zones in between.

A simple habit helps: download your offline Google Maps for any rural area before you leave the city. That way you can still navigate even where the bars disappear.

This is the question everyone gets wrong, usually by buying too much. Most people use far less than they think because hotels, cafes, and Airbnbs in Paraguay almost always have free WiFi.

A light user who checks maps, WhatsApp, and a few websites does fine on the 1 GB for 7 days plan at $2.65. If you are staying a couple of weeks and using data daily, the 5 GB for 30 days plan at $11.76 is the sweet spot. Heavy users who stream music, upload photos, or work on the road should grab the 10 GB for 30 days plan at $20.58.

If you only need internet for a quick stopover or a single busy day of shopping in Ciudad del Este, the 3 GB for 1 days plan at $8.90 covers a lot of browsing in one go. You can always buy a second plan later, so when unsure, start small.

One thing to confirm before you buy: your phone must support eSIM and it must be carrier unlocked. Almost every recent phone qualifies, including iPhone XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Note models.

To check on an iPhone, open Settings, then General, then About, and scroll down. If you see an Available SIM or EID line, you are good. On Android, look in your network settings for an option to add an eSIM or a download SIM choice.

Carrier unlocked means your phone is not tied to one home network. If you bought your phone outright or finished paying it off, it is almost always unlocked. If unsure, ask your home carrier before your trip.

Do this part at home before you fly, while you still have your own WiFi. Installing the eSIM does not start the clock or use any data. After you buy, you get an email with a QR code.

On your phone, open the camera or the add eSIM screen in your settings and scan that QR code. Your phone downloads the plan in about a minute. That is the install done. Now leave the plan switched off until you arrive.

When you land in Paraguay, go into your settings, turn the new line on, and switch on data roaming for it. Data roaming sounds scary but it is normal and free here, it just tells your phone to use the Claro network. Within a minute you should see Claro and a 4G signal, and you are online.

You can buy a physical SIM at the Asunción airport, but it is usually pricier than city shops and you must show your passport to register it, which is the law in Paraguay. Kiosks also keep their own hours, so a late flight can leave you stuck.

An eSIM skips all of that. You set it up before you ever leave home and it is working the second you land. The one thing to know is that this plan is data only, so it does not give you a Paraguayan phone number. That is fine for almost everyone, since calls and texts go through WhatsApp, which is what locals use anyway.
