Before you buy

  • Your device must be carrier unlocked to use an eSIM.
  • iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau may not support eSIM.
  • Some Samsung US models may lack eSIM, so verify with your carrier.
  • Not sure? Dial *#06# and if you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM.

Any phone

Open the dialler and type *#06#. If an EID appears next to the IMEI, your phone has eSIM hardware.

iPhone

Settings, then General, then About, and scroll to the bottom. An EID line means you are good to go.

Android

Settings, then About phone, then EID or SIM status. On Samsung it sits under SIM manager.

One thing worth knowing: eSIM hardware is only half the story, because your phone also has to be carrier unlocked. If you bought it outright it almost certainly is. If it came bundled with a contract, ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel, since they can usually do it free once the contract is paid off.

Common questions

My phone is on the list. Does that guarantee it works?+

It means the hardware supports eSIM, which is the main hurdle. The other requirement is that your phone is carrier unlocked. Those two together cover almost every case.

Why are some models marked as not compatible?+

A few regional variants ship without eSIM hardware even though the same model number supports it elsewhere. iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau are the best known example, and a handful of Samsung models sold in the United States also skip it.

My phone is newer than anything on this list.+

If it is a recent flagship it almost certainly supports eSIM. Dial *#06# and look for an EID to confirm. Our list is rebuilt from manufacturer data regularly, so very new releases sometimes take a little while to appear.

Can I use an eSIM on a tablet or a smartwatch?+

Many cellular iPads and some Android tablets take a data eSIM and work fine with a travel plan. Smartwatches are different, because they usually need a plan tied to your home carrier number rather than a standalone travel eSIM.

What if my phone has no SIM tray at all?+

That is normal on newer iPhones sold in the United States. Those handsets are eSIM only and work perfectly with travel plans. You simply end up running two eSIM profiles side by side instead of one physical SIM plus one eSIM.

Does using an eSIM replace my normal number?+

No. The eSIM is an extra line. Your usual number stays active for calls and texts, and you choose the eSIM for data. That is exactly the setup most travellers want.
