Why Calls Home Behave Differently On Our eSIM

Saudi Arabia lifted its ban on internet calling back in September 2017. Pilgrims keep reporting the same thing anyway. The call connects and the audio disappears. Or it works in one hotel and not the next one down the road.

In February 2026 WhatsApp calling visibly came back for a lot of people across the Kingdom, which tells you plainly that it had been interfered with rather than switched off. It is the single biggest reason pilgrims who have tried both stop buying local SIMs.

Almost every guide answers this with a number somebody guessed. Here is a real one.

One of us has performed Umrah three times. On the last trip: daily video calls home, photographs to family throughout the day, and a MacBook tethered to the phone in the evening. Seven days in, a little over 20 GB was gone. That is roughly 2.8 GB a day, and it is the heavy end of what a pilgrim uses.

Most people are nowhere near that, because the hours that would eat data are the hours you are not on your phone at all. Use this instead of guessing.

A WhatsApp video call runs at roughly 300 MB an hour, so twenty minutes to the family each evening is about 100 MB, or 1.4 GB across a fortnight. Voice only calls cost a fraction of that. The thing that quietly drains a plan is tethering a laptop.

Read That Table Properly, It Does Not All Go Our Way

On total spend at the small end we are cheaper: 3 GB over 15 days for $6.06 against the cheapest local entry, Mobily Visitors 30 at $9.20 for 5 GB. On gigabytes per riyal they win, and it is not close. The best value package in that whole table is STC visitor 104, 65 GB for $32.00. If raw data per riyal is the only thing you care about, buy a local SIM. We would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong plan.

What That Price Does Not Include

STC's own page says it plainly, and Mobily and Zain work the same way: you must visit a branch on arrival to activate the number. Not a kiosk in the arrivals hall, a branch. Passport, visa or border number, fingerprints, during Umrah season when every other pilgrim on your flight needs the same thing. Then your own SIM comes out of the phone.

Signal, Mosque WiFi And The Nusuk App

Three things to settle before you decide how much data to buy, including one that argues against buying more.

The Haram WiFi Is Real, And It Congests

Free WiFi genuinely exists in the courtyards of Masjid al Haram and at Masjid an Nabawi, and Saudi extended it to Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah for Hajj. It also carries millions of people at once, so around Maghrib and Isha it slows to nothing, exactly the hour you want to call home. Treat it as a bonus, never as your plan.

Hotel WiFi Is Worse Than The Mosque

Hotels in the Haram area are dense and hundreds of rooms share one line. Every guest logs on after prayer at the same moment, so video calls drop, messages queue and maps refuse to load. It also only helps you inside the building, when the whole point of data on Umrah is finding your group in a crowd of thousands outside it.

You Do Not Need Data For Nusuk

This is the part other eSIM sites leave out, because it does not sell anything. Saudi zero rated the Nusuk app with stc, Mobily and Zain. Your Umrah permit, your Rawdah booking, the maps inside it and the emergency contacts all work with no data and no WiFi. Buy data to speak to your family and keep your photographs, not because somebody frightened you about permits.

Common Questions From Pilgrims

Which eSIM is best for Umrah?

The one that covers the days you are actually in the Kingdom with enough data for daily calls home. Most pilgrims are not heavy users once the hotel WiFi is taken out of the picture, so a mid sized plan is usually the right buy. Ours start at $2.27 and run on the same Saudi networks a local SIM uses.

Does eSIM work in Mecca?

Yes. An eSIM is not a different network, it is a different way of loading the SIM profile onto your phone. In Makkah and Madinah you connect to the same STC, Mobily and Zain network everyone else is on, including around the Haram and along the road between the two cities.

Are eSIMs allowed in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. eSIMs are fully legal in Saudi Arabia and the Saudi operators sell them themselves. Roaming on a visitor eSIM is ordinary roaming. It needs no permission, no registration and no paperwork at the border.

Which SIM is best for Umrah in Saudi Arabia?

What that price costs you is a branch visit on arrival, fingerprint registration, and your own number switched off for the trip. Can I make WhatsApp calls during Umrah?

On our eSIM, yes, with nothing to set up. Your data breaks out to the internet in Belgium, not through the Saudi local path. A WhatsApp voice or video call leaves the country before it meets any local filtering. On a local SIM or hotel WiFi, calls have been unreliable for years even though the official ban was lifted back in September 2017.

Do I need mobile data for the Nusuk app?

How much data do I need for ten days of Umrah?

If you message, use maps and send photos home, budget around half a gigabyte a day. Add a daily video call and it is closer to a gigabyte. One of us performed Umrah with a laptop tethered every evening and daily calls home, and used a little over 20 GB in seven days, which is the heavy end.

Will my own number still work while I am there?

Yes. The eSIM installs alongside your normal SIM instead of replacing it. Your usual number stays live for bank codes and calls from home, and you simply set the eSIM as the line that carries data.
