eSIM for Central Asia

This plan covers Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan on a single eSIM. You install it once before you leave and it keeps working as you cross each border, with no new QR code and no hunting for a shop in a town where nobody speaks your language.

That combination is the awkward one. Most regional plans that mention Central Asia quietly leave Tajikistan out, which is exactly the country where you least want to be offline. If your route is Almaty to Bishkek to Tashkent and then down into the Pamirs, check the country list on any plan you are considering before you buy, including ours.

The four countries here are the four most people actually travel between. If your trip also takes in Turkmenistan or Azerbaijan, this plan will not cover those and you are better off buying per country.

Three gigabytes across fifteen days is $5.24, which suits a two week circuit where you are mostly using maps and messaging. Twenty gigabytes across thirty days is $32.76 and is the one to take if you are working as you go or spending a month on the road.

Buying four separate country plans is often cheaper on paper, and if you are spending most of your trip in one country that is the better buy. The regional plan earns its price when you are crossing borders every few days and do not want to think about it. Both options are on this site and we are not going to push you toward the one that suits us.

For comparison, at the time of writing a well known competitor sells an unlimited Central Asia plan at around $35 for fifteen days and it excludes Tajikistan. Ours includes it.

Almaty, Astana, Bishkek, Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Dushanbe are all straightforward. You will have a normal working connection in the cities and along the main roads between them.

The Pamir Highway is the exception and no eSIM changes that. Coverage there is thin for everyone, including local SIM cards, and long stretches have nothing at all. Treat it as an offline section of the trip, download your maps in Dushanbe or Khorog, and tell people at home you will be out of contact.

The Kazakh steppe between cities and the mountain roads in Kyrgyzstan behave the same way. Signal in the towns, gaps in between. Download offline maps before you set off and the rest takes care of itself.

Nothing. That is the point of it. When you cross from Kazakhstan into Kyrgyzstan the eSIM attaches to a network on the other side by itself, usually within a few minutes of your phone finding signal again.

If it does not reconnect after a border, turn flight mode on and off. That forces a fresh network search and fixes it almost every time. If it still will not attach, select the network by hand in your phone settings rather than leaving it on automatic.

No. This is data only, so there is no local number in any of the four countries and no local calls or texts.

In practice that matters less than people expect. Yandex Go, which is how most visitors get taxis across the whole region, works on data with your existing account. Maps, translation, messaging and card payments are the same. Your home SIM stays in the phone next to the eSIM, so any security code sent to your usual number still arrives.

Buy it at home, scan the QR code on Wi-Fi, and leave it switched off. Installing writes the profile to the phone but does not start the plan, so there is no cost to doing it a week early. The clock starts when it first connects to a network in the region.

Do not leave this until you land. Installing an eSIM needs internet, and airport Wi-Fi in the region ranges from slow to absent. Once you arrive, switch on data roaming for the eSIM line only and leave your home line's roaming off.
