eSIM for Middle East

The plan covers 21 countries: Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Pakistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Read that list again, because half of it is not what most people mean by the Middle East.

The absences matter just as much, and nobody prints them. Lebanon is not on this plan. Neither is Iran, Syria or Yemen. If one of those is on your itinerary, this plan does nothing for you there. Check the 21 against your booking, stop by stop, before you pay for anything.

The wins sit at the edges of that list. A trip that runs Istanbul, then Dubai, then Cairo sits inside one plan. So does Amman to Tel Aviv. So does a Silk Road run through Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Most people buying a Gulf eSIM have no idea North Africa and Central Asia came in the same bundle.

Yes. The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are all on the plan, so a Dubai, Riyadh or Doha trip is covered from the moment you land. But if that one city is your only stop, the single country plan for it is usually the cheaper buy.

Here is the rule we would use ourselves. One country, one trip, buy the country plan. Two or more of the 21, or a land border somewhere in the middle, buy the regional one. The regional plan is not really about price. It is about not standing in a taxi queue in Amman installing a second eSIM.

People search for their own country, never for a region, so here it is plainly. Oman, yes. Jordan, yes. Israel, yes. Turkey, yes. Egypt, yes. Pakistan, yes. Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, also yes, though both of those turn up on other regional plans too. If your trip leans Central Asian, compare the two before you decide.

Plans start at $3.99, there are 18 of them, and the best rate on plans of 20GB or less works out at $2.90 per gigabyte. Those are two different numbers. The second one is the one that decides what you really pay.

A starting price on its own tells you almost nothing. The $3.99 entry buys a single gigabyte, so that is $3.99 per gigabyte, and the only plans that cost more per gigabyte are the 30 day sizes, which reach $4.40. Move up the sizes and the rate improves until it reaches $2.90. Push past 20GB and it stops improving. Compare regions by price per gigabyte and the picture changes completely.

There is no unlimited plan on this region. Not a hidden one, not a fair use one, none at all. All 18 plans are a fixed amount of data over a fixed number of days. If one of the big brands has promised you unlimited data across the Gulf, go and read its fair use terms before you believe it.

Size the plan on behaviour, not on how long you are away. Maps, messages and boarding passes barely touch the bucket. Video calls home and photo uploads empty it. If you expect to work from a laptop, buy one size up from your instinct.

Because the UAE telecoms regulator blocks consumer voice and video calling apps on UAE networks. Your eSIM connects to Etisalat or du like every other phone in the country, so it inherits the same block. Messages, photos and data all work normally. It is the calls that will not connect.

This catches travellers out in arrivals every day. They land, the data works, the signal is full, and the call home just rings out. Nothing is broken and nothing needs fixing. Botim and C'Me are the calling apps licensed in the country, and they are the dependable route. Agree with family before you fly that you will message rather than call.

You will read claims that a foreign eSIM slips past the block because the traffic routes out of the country. Sometimes it does. Do not build your week around it. And be clear about whose rule this is. It is set by the UAE regulator, it applies to local SIMs too, and no eSIM seller can switch it off for you.

Your eSIM drops the old network and registers on a local one in the new country, usually within a few minutes. Your remaining data and your remaining days carry across untouched. You do nothing, you install nothing, and you buy nothing at the crossing.

That matters most between Jordan and Israel. Allenby Bridge and Wadi Araba are exactly where travellers end up buying a second SIM, because a plan bought for one side rarely works on the other. Both sides sit on this plan, so the whole problem disappears.

Saudi Arabia is the other one worth knowing about. A local Saudi SIM has to be registered against your identity, with passport checks and in some cases a biometric step through the operator. Roaming in on a travel eSIM skips all of it. You land with data already working and nobody takes your fingerprints.

If the eSIM has not attached a few minutes after a crossing, switch airplane mode on and off. If it still sits there doing nothing, open your network settings and choose an operator by hand rather than leaving it on automatic. That clears almost every case.

Install it at home on WiFi before you fly, then switch on data roaming when you land. The validity clock does not start when you pay for the plan. It starts the first time the eSIM connects to a network in one of the 21 countries.

So install early, and install somewhere with WiFi you trust. You cannot install an eSIM over mobile data you do not have yet. That is the loop people get stuck in at one in the morning in an arrivals hall, and it is entirely avoidable the day before.

Buying more than one, for a partner or for the kids, gives you a separate QR code for each. Every code is its own eSIM with its own data. There is no shared family pot, so size each person's plan for how that person actually uses a phone.

This is a data plan and nothing more. It gives you no local phone number, so nothing can text you on it and you cannot dial a local number from it. Keep your home SIM in the phone for that, with its own data roaming turned off so it cannot quietly bill you.

There are four trips where this is the wrong purchase, and we would rather say so. If you are flying to one country and staying there, buy that country's plan, because a regional plan you only use in Dubai is money you did not need to spend. If you want unlimited data, this region does not have it in any form, and pretending otherwise would just create a refund later. If most of your stops are Central Asian, look carefully at the other regional plans first, because Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan sit on more than one of them and another region may fit your route better. And if a stop on your itinerary is not among the 21 countries listed above, no amount of good coverage elsewhere helps you there. Read your route, then buy.
