eSIM for Puerto Rico

A normal SIM card is the tiny plastic chip your phone company gives you to get you online and make calls. An eSIM does the same job, but there is no plastic chip. It is a SIM that lives inside your phone as software. You add it by scanning a code, not by opening a tray with a pin.

For a trip to Puerto Rico this is great news. You do not have to find a shop in Old San Juan or wait in a line at the airport. You buy your data online, scan a code, and your phone is ready. When you land at Luis Munoz Marin Airport, you walk out connected and can open your maps right away.

Your phone needs a local network to get a signal. In Puerto Rico, the MegaEsim plan connects to Claro, one of the main carriers on the island. So even though you bought the data from us online, your phone is really using Claro towers all over Puerto Rico.

This means you get the same kind of coverage a local Claro user gets. Strong 4G LTE across the cities and the busy tourist spots, and growing 5G in the bigger areas. You do not need to know anything technical here. The phone finds Claro on its own once the eSIM is on.

This is the question most first time buyers get stuck on. The honest answer is that most people use less than they fear, because hotels, cafes and many restaurants in Condado, Isla Verde and Old San Juan have free WiFi. You mostly need mobile data for maps, messages, and looking things up while you are out and about.

Here is a simple way to choose. For a short weekend in San Juan where you check maps and chat, the 1 GB for 7 days plan at $2.37 is plenty. For a one week trip with some photo sharing and music, the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $6.31 fits well. If you are not sure, pick the middle option. Running a little under is better than paying for data you never touch.

Do this while you still have WiFi at home, not after you land. Buy your plan on the MegaEsim Puerto Rico page. You will get an email with a QR code, which is that square black and white pattern.

On an iPhone, open Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code from the email. On most Android phones, open Settings, then Network and internet or Connections, then SIM manager, and choose to add an eSIM. Your phone walks you through the rest. The whole thing takes a couple of minutes.

One thing to check first. Your phone must support eSIM and must be carrier unlocked. Most iPhones from the XR onward and recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones work fine. If you are not sure, the install step further down explains how to check.

When you arrive, your eSIM is installed but you may need to flip one switch. Go into your settings, find the MegaEsim line you added, and make sure Data Roaming is turned on for it. That word sounds scary but it just lets the eSIM use the Claro network. There are no extra charges for it. Your plan is already paid.

Also set this eSIM as your line for mobile data, while keeping your normal home number for calls and texts if you want. Within a minute or two you should see a signal and be online. Now you can pull up directions to your hotel or call a ride.

Claro coverage is strong where most travelers spend their time. San Juan, Ponce, Mayaguez, Caguas and the beach areas like Isla Verde and Condado all get a solid signal. Driving the main highways around the island is fine too.

Signal gets thin in a few places, and that is normal everywhere, not just here. Deep inside El Yunque rainforest the trees and hills block the signal. Some mountain roads in the central Cordillera are patchy. The fix is easy: before you head into El Yunque, open Google Maps and download the area for offline use so your map still works with no signal.

Compared to buying a physical SIM at a shop, the eSIM saves you time and a trip into town. Compared to using your home plan on roaming, it is far cheaper, since a week of Claro data here starts at just $2.37. For a short visit, the eSIM is usually the simplest and cheapest way to stay online.
