Best Travel eSIM for Tunisia

Ours runs on Ooredoo Tunisia. That is worth stating plainly, because almost no travel eSIM page tells you whose towers you are actually on, and in Tunisia the three networks are not equivalent once you leave the coast.

Tunisia has three operators: Ooredoo, Orange Tunisie and Tunisie Telecom. Ooredoo and Orange are the two most travellers end up on, and coverage between them is close in Tunis, Sousse, Hammamet and along the tourist coast. Tunisie Telecom, the former state operator, reaches further into the interior and the south.

For the trip most visitors take, which is Tunis plus the coast plus a run to the desert or to Kairouan, Ooredoo is a sound network and you are unlikely to notice a difference. If your trip is deep in the south, around Tataouine or the salt flats, expect thinner coverage on any network including a local one.

There is no single answer, and anyone giving you one is guessing. Ooredoo and Orange trade places on speed tests in the cities, while Tunisie Telecom tends to hold on longer in remote parts of the interior.

What actually matters for a visitor is narrower than the general question. You want data that works in Tunis, at your hotel on the coast, and on the road in between, and all three networks do that. The differences show up in places most holidays never reach.

We are on Ooredoo, so that is what we can speak for. If your itinerary is genuinely remote southern Tunisia and connectivity is critical rather than convenient, a local Tunisie Telecom SIM bought in country is the more careful choice and we would rather say so.

Yes. There are operator desks in the arrivals area at Tunis Carthage and you can buy a tourist SIM there with your passport. Registration is required, so the passport is not optional.

The honest trade is the same as at most airports. It is cheap, and it costs you time at the end of a flight, in a queue, at whatever hour you landed, and the desks are not always open for late arrivals. An eSIM installed before you fly is working the moment the plane doors open, which is mainly useful for arranging a taxi and telling someone you landed.

• Bring your passport if you go the local SIM route, registration is required
• Desk hours do not always cover late or early flights
• Local top ups are sold in shops and kiosks everywhere once you are set up
• An eSIM needs no desk, no passport and no queue, and it works on arrival

If you are staying a month and want a lot of data, a local SIM is likely cheaper than any travel eSIM including ours. For a week or two, the maths goes the other way once you count the queue and the card fee.

Here is the whole fixed data range with the price worked out per gigabyte, because a from price tells you nothing about the plan you will actually buy.

Worked out from these prices on 21 September 2026. The 5 GB plan at $5.92 is the one most holiday trips should look at. A fortnight of maps, messaging and photo uploads sits comfortably inside it.

The 1 GB plan exists for short stops and for people who will mostly be on hotel wifi. It is the worst value per gigabyte on the page, which is true of the smallest plan on every eSIM site including the ones selling it to you as a bargain.

Prices move. If one of these is cheaper on the day you read this, buy the cheaper one. We would rather you trust the page than the pitch.

Coming from Europe or North America, yes. Tunisia sits outside EU roaming, so a European phone that costs nothing to use in Spain or Italy will bill you properly here unless your plan specifically includes North Africa.

That catches a lot of people, because Tunisia feels close to Europe and is a short flight from several European capitals. It is not in the roam like at home area and your phone will not warn you before the charges start.

• Worth it: you are on a European contract, because Tunisia is outside EU roaming
• Worth it: you are coming from North America, the Gulf or anywhere with expensive roaming
• Worth it: you want data working before you leave the airport
• Probably not: a resort week where you will be on hotel wifi and never leave the grounds
• Probably not: a month or more of heavy data, where a local SIM wins on price

Between 3 GB and 5 GB for most holidays. Maps, messaging, a few searches and posting photos sits near the bottom of that. Video calls home every evening push you to the top.

Turn automatic photo backup to wifi only before you fly. On a beach holiday that one setting is usually the difference between 3 GB and 8 GB.

No. These are data plans, so there is no number and they cannot send or receive texts or calls. WhatsApp, Messenger and FaceTime all work normally over the data, which is how most people stay in touch anyway.

If something on your trip needs an actual Tunisian number, a hotel confirming by phone or a local booking, buy a local SIM at the airport or in a shop for that. Keep your home SIM switched on for texts if your bank sends codes, with its own data roaming turned off.

Four that matter, and none of them is a reason to skip one. They are reasons to buy the right one and set it up properly.

• No phone number, so no calls or texts to a normal number
• Your phone must be carrier unlocked and eSIM capable. Dial *#06# and look for an EID
• Deleting a profile is permanent, the QR code will not scan twice
• Support is by message, there is no shop to walk into

The one that causes real trouble is deletion. Phones hold a limited number of profiles and people tidy up by removing old ones, then find the code has already been used. Keep the profile until the trip is over, then delete it.

The one that costs money is the first. Decide before you buy whether anything on your trip needs a real phone number, because that changes what you should buy.

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. This confuses more travellers than anything else and the instinct to leave it off is exactly backwards.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile connecting to a Tunisian partner network, so to your phone it is always roaming. With that setting off the eSIM shows signal and passes no data, which looks like a broken eSIM and is not. The setting is per line, so switching it on for the eSIM does not switch it on for your home SIM.

The arrangement that works: eSIM as the line for mobile data with roaming on, home SIM left on for calls and texts with its own data roaming off.

Five minutes on wifi before you fly. All you need is the QR code we email you after payment.

• Check the phone: dial *#06# and look for an EID number
• Open the QR code on a second screen or print it, a phone cannot scan its own screen
• iPhone: Settings, then Mobile Service, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
• Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM
• Label it Tunisia so you can find it later
• Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data and switch its data roaming on

When you land, give it two or three minutes to register. If it still says no service, toggle airplane mode once, then check the eSIM line is selected for mobile data.

Keep the email. The profile cannot be moved to another phone and the code cannot be scanned twice, so the email is your record rather than a spare.

When the eSIM first connects to a Tunisian network, not when you buy it and not when you install it. Buy weeks ahead and install days ahead with nothing running down.

So installing early is the right move. It is the step that needs wifi and a little attention, and you would rather do it at home than in the arrivals hall at Tunis Carthage.

The clock then runs in calendar days rather than 24 hour blocks from first use.

In Djerba, Sousse, Hammamet, Monastir and along the whole tourist coast, yes, without drama. Those are well covered and you will mostly be on 4G with 5G in the bigger centres.

Inland and south the picture thins, which is true of every Tunisian network. Around Tozeur and Douz you will have coverage in the towns and patchy service between them. Out on the salt flats and in the deep desert, assume nothing, on any network.

If you are doing a desert tour, download your maps offline first and treat data as a bonus. That advice holds whether you buy from us, from a competitor, or from a shop in Tunis.

Yes. Hotspot and tethering are allowed on every Tunisia plan here, and the data comes out of the same allowance.

Watch it if you are working. A laptop moves through data far faster than a phone, especially on video calls, so the 10 GB plan at $10.81 is the sensible starting point rather than the 3 GB.

If you are staying a month or more and expect heavy data use, buy a local SIM once you are there. A Tunisian prepaid plan with a big data bundle costs less than any travel eSIM over that period, ours included, and we would rather tell you now than after you have paid.

If your phone is carrier locked, nothing here will work and no support agent can unlock it. Check before you buy. And if you need a Tunisian phone number rather than data, this is not the product for that.

If your trip is a resort week with wifi at the hotel and no plans to leave it, offline maps and airplane mode will do the job for nothing.

For a holiday of a week or two, arriving from Europe or further, this is the right product and $5.92 for 5 GB over 30 days is the plan we would point most people at.

What we would not tell you is that no other option could suit you better. A local SIM beats us on price for long stays, and if your itinerary is deep in the southern interior a Tunisie Telecom SIM bought in country is the more careful choice. Neither of those is us.

Where we are confident is value per gigabyte for a normal trip, being clear that you are on Ooredoo rather than leaving you to guess, and being connected before you reach the taxi rank.
