eSIM for Kazakhstan

Local SIMs in Kazakhstan are cheap but come with passport registration and a device registration rule for longer stays. A travel eSIM skips both. Our Kazakhstan eSIM starts at $1.29, and 10 GB for a month is $8.76, roughly half of what Airalo or Saily want for the same data on the same towers.

Kazakhstan has three networks: Beeline, Kcell (with its Activ brand) and Tele2 with Altel. Beeline and Kcell split most of the country between them, each covering about nine in ten people. In Almaty and Astana all three are quick, with measured speeds above 90 Mbps on a good day and 5G rolling out in the big cities.

Outside the cities is where Kazakhstan reminds you it is the ninth biggest country on earth. Between cities and out on the steppe there are long stretches of nothing, on any network. Charyn Canyon has signal at the visitor center and viewpoints and none down in the canyon itself. In the mountains around Almaty, Beeline has the best reputation, which is exactly the network our eSIM uses.

You can buy a SIM at the Almaty or Astana airport or at any carrier shop in town. The SIM itself costs about a dollar, and a solid tourist bundle runs $4 to $17. Tele2 sells airport tourist packs around $12 to $14 with big allowances. City shops are a little cheaper than the airport counters. Prices went up twice around the start of 2026, so older blog posts lowball the cost.

Now the two rules worth knowing:

• Passport registration is mandatory. Every local SIM is registered to your passport in a government database. The desk takes your photo and your details, and the whole thing takes a while when there is a queue.
• The IMEI rule. Since 2025, any phone that connects to a Kazakh network with a local SIM has to be registered in the national device database. You get about 30 days of grace after first connecting, warning texts included, and then calls, texts and data stop working. Staying under a month? You will squeak through. Longer trip, or a return visit on the same phone? You have paperwork to do, in Kazakh or Russian.

Here is the part that matters for travelers: a travel eSIM is treated as roaming, so it is exempt from both the passport registration and the IMEI rule entirely. Your phone is a guest, not a resident.

You buy online before you fly, scan a QR code on wifi at home, and land in Almaty with working data. No airport counter, no photo, no database. Every big eSIM brand covers Kazakhstan, and as usual they all quietly use the same few local networks while charging wildly different prices.

If you are staying six weeks, speak Russian, and want a local number for every app, a local SIM from a city Beeline or Activ shop is great value, IMEI paperwork and all.

For a normal trip of one to three weeks, the eSIM is the obvious pick. It costs about the same or less than the airport tourist packs, takes two minutes to set up from your sofa, skips the passport queue, and never triggers the 30 day device rule. You keep your home SIM active for calls and bank codes, and the eSIM quietly handles all the data.

One honest note: Yandex Go, the local taxi app, wants a phone number to create a brand new account. If you already have a Yandex or Uber account from home it works fine over data. If not, Almaty taxis still take cash and cards, and hotels will happily order cars for you.

Install the eSIM at home, while you still have your normal wifi. After you buy, you get a QR code by email. On an iPhone go to Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. On Android open Settings, then Network, then SIMs, then add an eSIM. The whole thing takes a couple of minutes.

Here is the important part. Do not turn on the data yet. Install it now, but leave it switched off until you land. Most of our plans start counting the day you first connect, so you want that clock to start in Kazakhstan, not in your kitchen at home.

Once the plane lands and you can use your phone again, open Settings and turn the eSIM line on. Switch Data Roaming to on for that line too. This sounds wrong, but roaming just lets the eSIM talk to Beeline. You will not pay extra. Within a minute or two your phone should show Beeline and a 4G or 5G signal.

Almaty International Airport and Astana International Airport both have strong coverage, so you will be online before you reach the taxi rank. Use it right away to book a Yandex Go ride, message your hotel, or check the road into the city.

A short city break needs less than you think. If you mostly use maps, chat apps, and the odd photo upload, the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $2.88 covers a long weekend in Almaty with room to spare.

Staying a week or two and watching the odd video? The 5 GB for 30 days plan at $4.80 is the sweet spot for most travelers. Heavy users, remote workers, and anyone sharing a hotspot should take the 10 GB for 30 days plan at $8.76. If you are just passing through for a day, the 1 GB for 1 days plan at $1.29 keeps you online for almost nothing.

This is the one thing every Kazakhstan guide should be honest about. Once you leave the cities for the big nature spots, no eSIM gives you full coverage, and ours is the same. At Charyn Canyon, about 200 km east of Almaty, you may get a bar or two near the car park and visitor center, but the canyon floor is mostly dead. The Kolsai Lakes are similar.

Plan for it. Before you set off, download the offline map of the area in Google Maps. Save your hotel address, tour booking, and driver's number where you can read them with no signal. You will get back online as you return toward the highway and the nearby villages.

Roaming with your home carrier in Kazakhstan can run several dollars per day, which adds up fast on a longer trip. A local Beeline shop SIM is cheap, but you need your passport, some Russian or Kazakh, and time you would rather spend exploring.

In central Almaty, around the Green Bazaar, Kok Tobe, and Panfilov Park, the Beeline signal is fast and steady. The same goes for Astana around the Bayterek Tower and the Left Bank. You can stream, video call, and upload without thinking about it.

Heading up to Medeu and the Shymbulak ski resort? Coverage follows the main road and the resort itself stays connected, though it can thin out on the higher slopes and in the deeper valleys. Beeline is the best network you can be on for these mountain areas, which is exactly why our eSIM uses it.

If Big Almaty Lake, Shymbulak or Charyn Canyon are on your list, plan for signal to come and go.
