eSIM for Tajikistan

Ours connects to MegaFon Tajikistan and ZET Mobile. Your phone picks whichever is reachable where you are, which matters more here than in most countries because the gaps between coverage areas are large.

Tajikistan's networks are concentrated where the people are: Dushanbe, Khujand, the Vakhsh valley and the main road corridors. That covers the great majority of visits perfectly well. It is the mountains where the picture changes, and the mountains are why most people come.

We name the networks because it lets you check our claims against what other travellers report, rather than taking a marketing line on trust.

Partly, and we are going to be straight about this because it is a safety question rather than a convenience one.

You will have service in Khorog and in the larger settlements along the route. Between them, across the high passes, along the Wakhan corridor and up towards Murghab, expect long stretches with nothing at all. That is true of our eSIM, of a local SIM bought in Dushanbe, and of every other travel eSIM sold for Tajikistan.

• Download offline maps for the entire route before you leave Dushanbe
• Carry your permits and documents on paper as well as on your phone
• Tell someone your route and your expected check in times before you set off
• Anyone driving the Pamir seriously carries a satellite communicator, and no eSIM replaces one
• Treat any data you do get up there as a bonus, not as a plan

If your trip is Dushanbe, Khujand and the valleys, none of this applies and you will be connected the way you would expect anywhere else.

Yes. Operator shops in Dushanbe and Khujand sell tourist SIMs and you will need your passport, because registration is required. There are desks at the airport, though hours are limited and they do not reliably cover late arrivals.

A local SIM is cheap once you have it and it is the better answer for a long stay. The cost is time and friction at the start of a trip, in a country where the paperwork is not always in a language you read.

An eSIM avoids that entirely and is working when you land, which is worth more here than in an easy destination because arranging onward transport in Dushanbe is simpler with data.

Worked out on 21 September 2026. Data is genuinely more expensive in Tajikistan than in neighbouring countries and we are not going to dress that up. What we can say is that the larger plans are where the value sits, and that we sell sizes most competitors do not.

The thing worth noticing is the bottom two rows rather than the price gap. Airalo stops at 5 GB for Tajikistan. If you are here for a month, or working, or travelling with a laptop, there is nothing in their range to buy.

Prices move. If one of these is cheaper on the day you read this, buy the cheaper one.

Less than you would think, because you will spend a lot of the trip somewhere with no signal at all. The data gets used in the cities, on the planning days, and on the evenings when you are back in range and everything syncs at once.

The pattern on a Pamir trip is not steady use. It is nothing for three days and then two gigabytes in an evening when the photos and messages all go at once. Size for the total, not for the daily average.

No. These are data plans, so no number and no texts or calls to a normal number. WhatsApp, Telegram and the rest work over the data, and Telegram in particular is widely used in the region.

If you need a local number, for a guesthouse or a driver to ring you, buy a local SIM with your passport once you arrive. Keep your home SIM on for bank codes with its data roaming switched off.

Yes. eSIM works normally in Tajikistan on an unlocked, eSIM capable phone, and there is no special restriction on travellers using one.

The question comes up because some countries in the wider region do restrict eSIM or make it difficult, so people reasonably check before buying. If your trip continues into neighbouring countries, check each one separately rather than assuming the region behaves the same way.

What Tajikistan does require, like most of its neighbours, is passport registration for a local SIM. That requirement does not apply to a travel eSIM, which is part of why people buy one.

Yes for almost any visit from outside Central Asia. Roaming charges from a European, North American or Gulf contract in Tajikistan are among the steeper ones you will meet, and there is no roaming agreement that quietly covers you here.

The stronger argument is arrival. Dushanbe airport is not a place where you want to be working out transport without data, and the SIM desk hours do not reliably match flight arrival times.

• Worth it: you land at an awkward hour and need transport sorted
• Worth it: a Pamir trip, where the connected days matter more because there are fewer of them
• Probably not: a stay of a month or more, where a local SIM is cheaper once you have it
• Probably not: you are continuing overland across several countries, where a regional plan may suit better

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. This is the setting that trips people up everywhere and the instinct to leave it off is backwards.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile on a local partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming at all times. With the setting off it shows signal and moves no data, which looks exactly like a broken eSIM. It is per line, so your home SIM is unaffected.

Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data, roaming on. Leave the home SIM on for texts with its own data roaming off.

Five minutes on wifi before you travel, using the QR code we email after payment. Do it at home. Dushanbe airport wifi is not something to depend on.

• Check the phone: dial *#06# and look for an EID number
• Open the QR code on a second screen or print it
• iPhone: Settings, then Mobile Service, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
• Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM
• Label it Tajikistan
• Set it as the line for mobile data and switch its data roaming on

On landing, allow a few minutes to register. If nothing happens, toggle airplane mode once and check the eSIM line is selected for mobile data. If it still fails, select a network manually and try the other of the two.

Keep the email. The profile cannot move to another phone and the code will not scan twice.

When the eSIM first connects to a Tajik network, not at purchase and not at install. Buy and install well ahead with nothing running down.

This matters more on a Central Asia trip than most, because itineraries here slip. A plan bought for a Tuesday arrival is not wasted if you arrive on the Thursday.

The clock then runs in calendar days rather than from first use in 24 hour blocks.

No. This is a Tajikistan plan and it stops at the border, which matters here because a lot of people cross overland into Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan on the same trip.

Two options. Buy a plan for each country, which is cheaper per gigabyte and puts you on the better local networks in each, and install them all before you leave home. Or buy a regional Central Asia plan covering the whole route on one profile.

For a two country trip, separate plans usually win. For a full Silk Road run across four, the regional plan is easier and the price gap narrows.

Yes, hotspot and tethering work on every plan here and the data comes from the same allowance.

If you are working from Dushanbe rather than passing through, start at $42.17 for 20 GB. A laptop on video calls will move through 5 GB faster than you expect, and topping up repeatedly costs more than buying the right size once.

If you are staying a month or more, buy a local SIM with your passport once you arrive. It will cost less than any travel eSIM over that period, ours included.

If your trip is mostly Pamir and you genuinely need to be reachable, no eSIM from anyone is the right tool. Hire or carry a satellite communicator and treat mobile data as the thing that works in the towns.

For a normal visit built around Dushanbe, Khujand and the valleys, this works well and $12.59 for 5 GB over 30 days covers most trips comfortably.

Data in Tajikistan costs more than in the countries around it and we are not going to pretend our prices are low in absolute terms. What we can point to is that we sell 10 GB and 20 GB plans where several competitors stop at 5 GB, which is the difference between having an option and not.
