Getting from Lungi to Freetown with data on Orange's network

Yes, you can get online in Sierra Leone with an eSIM, and ours joins Orange's 4G network. The first thing that makes this country different is the airport. Lungi International sits across the Sierra Leone River from Freetown, so your arrival ends with a boat crossing or a long drive, and having data from the runway makes that much easier.

01 How do you get from Lungi to Freetown, and where does data help?

The usual answer is a water taxi, which Visit Sierra Leone calls the most widely used option. It names Sea Coach Express and Sea Bird Express, puts the crossing at about 30 minutes and the whole door to door transfer at 80 to 120 minutes. The road via Port Loko takes 3 to 5 hours.

The same page warns the crossing can be bumpy in the rainy season. With the eSIM installed before you fly, you can switch it on in arrivals, message whoever is meeting you and check boat times without hunting for airport wifi. Do you need wifi to activate an eSIM? covers that first connection.

02 Which networks run in Sierra Leone, and how far does Orange reach?

Orange is one of three main mobile networks, alongside Africell and Qcell, and it is the one our plan uses, on 4G. The Calabash newspaper reported in October 2024 that Orange had rolled out 4G across all of the country's districts.

That is a district level claim, not a map of every road, beach or island. Before heading up country or out to the islands, load the places you need in your map app while you still have signal in Freetown.

03 Can you buy a local SIM with just a passport?

You can register one with a passport, but it takes paperwork. Orange Sierra Leone's own registration page asks for an approved ID such as a passport, a clear photo and your residential address. In a shop, the agent takes your photo and you sign on a device.

In July 2025 the regulator NatCA also ordered that every SIM be linked to a National Identification Number by 1 October 2025, warning that unlinked lines would lose calls, SMS and data. Reports of the order do not say how short stay visitors fit in, so ask in store before relying on a local line.

04 Travelling from Liberia, The Gambia or Côte d'Ivoire?

Check your home plan first, because you may already roam cheaply. Sierra Leone switched on ECOWAS free roaming with Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia and Liberia on 6 August 2025, through Africell and Orange. Calls and data are charged at local rates, and incoming calls are free for up to 30 days.

Ask your own operator if your line is included before you travel. If it is not, or you want a separate line for data, the plans below apply.

05 Choosing a Sierra Leone data plan

All six plans run on Orange 4G and are data only. Match the days to your ticket home, then pick a size. The 3 GB plan costs almost the same for 30 days as for 15, so the longer one is worth taking if your dates could change.

Yes, if the eSIM is installed before you fly. Set it up at home on wifi, then in arrivals switch the line on and turn on data roaming for it. The water taxi across the river takes about 30 minutes, so message your pickup before you leave the terminal.

Only if you buy a local SIM. Orange Sierra Leone wants a passport or other approved ID, a clear photo and a home address.
