Everything You Need to Know About Using eSIM in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is one of the great travel countries, and in a 2023 survey its local mobile data was the most expensive in the world. This guide covers what a Zimbabwe eSIM costs in 2026, which network you connect to, what coverage really looks like once you leave the cities for Hwange or Mana Pools, and when a local Econet SIM makes more sense than a travel plan.

01 Is it worth sorting Zimbabwe data before you fly?

In a 2023 survey of 237 countries, Zimbabwe had the world's highest average price for 1 GB of local mobile data. Our Zimbabwe eSIM starts at $2.99 for 1 GB on the Econet network, which is the country's largest by a wide margin.

For a safari or a Victoria Falls trip, install it before you fly. You land connected and skip the registration queue.

02 Why data costs so much here

Zimbabwe's mobile data prices are shaped by currency instability and infrastructure costs, and international surveys have repeatedly placed the country among the most expensive in the world per gigabyte. Bundles are also sold in ways that expire quickly, so unused data does not carry over the way visitors expect.

On top of that, the country runs a dual currency economy. Prices are often quoted in US dollars, and paying in local currency can produce a different rate entirely. For a short visit, buying your data before you arrive removes a moving part from an already complicated money situation.

03 Econet, and what coverage really looks like

Our Zimbabwe plans run on Econet 4G. Econet is the country's largest network, with over 70% of mobile subscriptions, covering Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and the tourist corridor around Victoria Falls, along with the main highways between them.

Coverage in the national parks is a different story. Hwange, Mana Pools and the more remote parts of Matabeleland have long stretches with no signal at all, so ask your lodge what connection it offers. Plan for offline days rather than expecting a signal in the bush.

Victoria Falls town itself is well covered, including the area around the falls and the bridge. If you cross to the Zambian side at Livingstone, that is a different country and a different plan, so check before you walk over.

04 Local SIM cards and the registration rule

Buying an Econet or NetOne SIM in Zimbabwe means presenting your passport and registering the line, and you will need to be in the country to do it. Airport and border kiosks exist but they are not always open, and the bundle structures take some deciphering.

If you are staying for months, register locally and buy bundles like a resident. For a two week safari, the queue and the paperwork rarely pay for themselves.

05 Plan sizes for a safari and Victoria Falls trip

Safari days use little mobile data when you spend them away from signal. The 3 GB for 30 days plan at $10.99 covers maps, messaging and sending a few photos in the evenings.

If you are working remotely from Harare or Bulawayo, or hotspotting a laptop, step up to the 10 GB for 30 days plan at $23.99. Download offline maps for the parks before you leave the city, rather than hoping for signal at the gate.

06 Getting ready for a Zimbabwe trip

Zimbabwe rewards preparation. The falls, the parks and the people are extraordinary, and a local SIM means registering your passport on arrival. Sort connectivity before you land, keep your expectations realistic about the bush, and spend your attention on the trip instead of on airtime bundles.

Locally, yes. Zimbabwe regularly appears near the top of international surveys of mobile data cost per gigabyte, and local bundles often expire quickly. Buying a travel eSIM before you arrive avoids both the price and the bundle structure.
