Getting online in Nauru, where Digicel is the only mobile network

Yes, an eSIM works in Nauru, and our plan runs on Digicel's 4G network, the island's only mobile operator. Nauru covers just 21 square kilometres, with a 19 km ring road around the coast, so one network reaches most of it. What sets it apart is access: few flights, a visa to arrange first, and very few tourists.

01 What is different about using a phone in Nauru?

Mostly the scale. Nauru is the third smallest country in the world, after Vatican City and Monaco, and about 12,000 people live there. Digicel is its only mobile operator, and our plan connects to Digicel on 4G.

It is also one of the least visited countries anywhere, with about 200 tourists a year by Wikivoyage's count. Our plans start at $2.99 for 1 GB over 7 days and go up to 20 GB for 30 days at $48.99.

02 Does Digicel's signal reach the whole island?

Close to it. An ITU country profile reported that Digicel's seven base stations covered practically the entire island. The paved Island Ring Road runs 19 km around the coast, and Wikivoyage says a drive around it without stopping takes about 25 minutes. Phosphate mining stripped about 80 per cent of the land, leaving an interior plateau of limestone pinnacles.

Until August 2025, Nauru relied only on satellite for its international connection, which Digicel Nauru's chief executive said was vulnerable to heavy rain. That month the East Micronesia Cable landed, the island's first undersea cable, and Digicel said it expected service before the end of 2025.

03 Getting there, and why data matters on arrival

Nauru Airlines is the only airline flying in, with routes to Brisbane, Nadi, Suva, Tarawa, Majuro and Pohnpei. Wikivoyage says each destination is served one to three times a week, so a moved flight is not quickly replaced. Being able to reach your airline, employer or accommodation without hunting for wifi is the practical reason to arrive with a working connection.

Wikivoyage suggests buying a Digicel SIM on arrival if your home operator has no roaming deal with Nauru. With an eSIM installed before you fly, you can skip that errand. For wifi, Wikivoyage lists an internet café run by CenpacNet in Aiwo district.

04 Picking a plan for a short visit or a work posting

For a stay of a week or less with maps, messages and email, 1 GB for 7 days at $2.99 is usually enough. A month long posting suits 3 GB for 30 days at $8.99, or 5 GB for 30 days at $12.99 if you take regular video calls. For a single day on the ground, 1 GB for 1 day costs $3.23, with 2 GB at $6.13 and 3 GB at $8.72. A long contract with heavy use suits 10 GB for 30 days at $23.99.

Save your airline booking and your hotel and employer contacts offline before you fly. The island is small enough to find your way by landmark, so a saved phone number matters more than a map. If you run a laptop off your phone's hotspot, it uses the same allowance, so choose a bigger plan.

05 Paperwork to keep on your phone

Most visitors need a Nauru visa before they travel. Wikivoyage says only citizens of certain Pacific nations get a free visa on arrival, and puts a tourist visa at about 100 Australian dollars. Keep the approval, your Nauru Airlines booking and your host's details saved offline, so you can show them at arrival without a signal. Nauru uses the Australian dollar, which is worth knowing if you top up or buy a SIM in person.

Digicel 4G. Because Nauru is only twenty one square kilometres, coverage is effectively island wide along the ring road and the coastal districts.

Not in practice. Digicel is the network visitors use, so there is no shopping around, which also means a single plan covers the whole island.
