Mobile data in Tonga, from Nuku'alofa to the whale boats of Vava'u

Yes, an eSIM works in Tonga, and our plan runs on Digicel's 4G network, which covers the main island groups. Tonga's difference is its history of isolation. The 2022 eruption cut its only international cable for five weeks, and a second cable opened in May 2026 to give the kingdom a backup route.

01 Could Tonga lose its internet again, as it did in 2022?

The risk is lower than it was. On 15 January 2022 the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption broke the cable linking Tonga to Fiji, and the country was largely cut off until repairs were finished on 22 February. On 26 May 2026 Tonga opened a second international cable, the Tu'i Vava'u.

The new 405 km cable branches off the Hawaiki cable system to Vava'u, so traffic can be rerouted if one international link fails. Our plans start at $3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days on Digicel.

02 How far does Digicel reach across the islands?

Our plan connects to Digicel on 4G. The Tonga Pocket Guide rates Digicel strongest on the populated islands of Tongatapu, Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua, while TCC's UCall reaches more of the remote outer islands. Digicel switched on 5G at six sites in November 2024, but our plan is listed for 4G.

Plan for no signal once you are out on the water. Treat whale swimming trips, sailing between the Vava'u islands and remote beaches as offline time.

03 Whale season, boats and offline planning

Humpback whales are in Tongan waters from July to October, and Tonga Tourism asks visitors to book only with its listed licensed operators. Swims run from Vava'u, Ha'apai and Tongatapu. A whale trip means hours on a boat, so save meeting points and operator numbers offline before you leave the harbour.

Flights and boats between the island groups are where saved phone numbers help most. If a departure changes, you will want your operator's and guesthouse's numbers to hand. If you are based in Neiafu on Vava'u, save an offline map of the town too.

04 Is a Digicel or UCall SIM worth buying on arrival?

For a stay of several weeks, or if you want a Tongan number for calling boat operators, yes. The Tonga Pocket Guide says both have outlets at Fua'amotu airport and in Nuku'alofa, a basic SIM costs about 5 pa'anga, and you should bring ID. Bundles run from about 1 to 100 pa'anga, and the guide adds that UCall's 4G only reaches Tongatapu and Vava'u.

For a one or two week trip, an eSIM installed at home saves that errand. That matters most if you arrive late in the week, since shops close on Sunday.

05 Which plan for a week on Tongatapu or a month in Vava'u?

A week of maps, messages and a few photo uploads fits the 1 GB for 7 days plan at $3.99. For a longer stay or more photo sharing, 3 GB lasts 15 days at $10.99 or 30 days at $10.99, and 5 GB for 30 days costs $17.99. For a single day, 1 GB costs $4.31.

Download offline maps for Tongatapu and Vava'u before you arrive, and save your guesthouse's number. Our plans are data only, so calls go over apps such as WhatsApp; for ordinary calls to local numbers, a Tongan SIM is simpler.

06 What closes on a Tongan Sunday?

Nearly all trade. Tonga's constitution bars anyone from trading or running a business on the Sabbath except as the law allows. ABC News reported in 2025 that almost every shop in Nuku'alofa stays shut, petrol stations included, while hotels and restaurants serving tourists have exemptions. Sort out any SIM or top up errand by Saturday.

Digicel 4G. Digicel covers Nuku'alofa and Tongatapu plus the main settlements in Vava'u and Ha'apai.

Day to day, mobile data works fine in the towns. The bigger picture is that Tonga relied on a single undersea cable, which was severed by the 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption and left the country largely offline for weeks. A second cable opened in May 2026, so traffic can now be rerouted if one link fails.
