eSIM for Indonesia

Telkomsel is the one to care about. It has by far the widest reach outside Java and Bali, and on the smaller islands it is often the only network with anything at all. Plans that cannot reach Telkomsel are fine in Seminyak and awkward in Flores.

Most travel eSIMs sold for Indonesia ride on one or two networks. Reaching all four is the difference between one fallback and three, and in Indonesia that is not a theoretical advantage.

In Bali, yes, comfortably, including the south, Ubud and the east coast. Canggu and Seminyak are among the better connected places in Southeast Asia because so many people work from there.

On Lombok, the Gilis, Nusa Penida and Flores it thins out, and it thins out for everyone. You will have service in the towns and at the main beaches, and gaps inland, on the crossings and up the volcanoes. Reaching Telkomsel is what keeps you connected more of the time.

If you are diving, island hopping by boat or climbing anything, download maps offline first. That advice holds whoever sells you the eSIM.

The whole fixed range with the price per gigabyte worked out, because the from price is always the plan you should least want.

For a stay of a month or more, it is worth considering. Indonesian prepaid data is cheap once you have it.

The friction is registration. Indonesian SIMs require your passport and registration against it, and the process at an airport counter is not always quick or cheap. Prices quoted to tourists at arrivals desks are routinely several times what a local pays in a shop in town.

For a two week holiday, the queue and the mark up usually wipe out the saving. For a two month stay in Bali, go into a proper Telkomsel shop in Denpasar once you have found your feet.

Coming from outside Southeast Asia, yes. Roaming charges here are steep from most contracts and Bali in particular is a place where you will use ride hailing apps constantly.

Gojek and Grab are how you get around, and both need data before they are any use. Landing at Denpasar without a connection means negotiating with the taxi queue instead, which is exactly the situation the app exists to avoid.

More than for a European city break, because ride hailing, maps and messaging run all day and Bali is a place people photograph constantly.

Set photo backup to wifi only before you fly. In Indonesia that one setting routinely halves what people use.

No. These are data plans, so no number and no texts or calls to a normal number. WhatsApp is what everyone in Indonesia uses anyway, and it works over the data.

Where it occasionally matters is Gojek and Grab, which sometimes want to verify a number or let a driver ring you. Both work with your home number registered, and drivers can usually reach you in the app. If you want a local number for it, buy a cheap local SIM alongside.

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. The instinct to leave it off is backwards and it is the most common reason a working eSIM looks broken.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile on an Indonesian partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming permanently. With it off the eSIM shows signal and passes no data. It is per line, so your home SIM is unaffected.

Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data with roaming on, home SIM on for texts with its own roaming off.

On arrival at Denpasar or Jakarta, allow two or three minutes to register. If nothing happens, toggle airplane mode once, then check the eSIM line is selected for mobile data.

Keep the email. The profile cannot move to another phone and the code will not scan twice.

Install at home before you fly. Long haul arrivals into Denpasar are often late at night and the last thing you want is to be troubleshooting a profile at the taxi rank.

If you are working from Bali, $23.80 for 50 GB is the plan. A laptop on video calls will move through 10 GB in a week, and topping up repeatedly costs more than buying the right size once.

No. This is an Indonesia plan and it stops at the border, which matters because so many trips here route through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.

Buy a plan for each country, which is cheaper per gigabyte and puts you on better local networks, or a regional Southeast Asia plan if you are crossing several borders. Several profiles can sit on one phone at once.

For a Singapore stopover of a few hours, the airport wifi is good enough that many people do not bother.

If you are staying a month or more, get a local Telkomsel SIM from a proper shop once you are settled. It will cost less than any travel eSIM over that period, ours included.

If your trip is a resort week where you will not leave the property, hotel wifi will cover you for nothing.

For a holiday of one to three weeks this is the right product, and $6.58 for 10 GB over 30 days is what we would point most Bali trips at.

The reason to pick this one over a cheaper looking alternative is the four networks. In Bali it will make no difference at all. On Flores, on a boat to Komodo, or halfway up a volcano at four in the morning, reaching Telkomsel is the difference between having a map and not.

For a long stay, a local SIM wins on price and we would rather say so than take the sale.
