Since installation needs internet and your destination's airport WiFi is an unknown quantity, do the download where internet is guaranteed: your sofa. Buy the plan, scan the QR code on home WiFi, and let the phone finish the download completely. The plan sits dormant, costing nothing, until you land and it meets a local network. Landing with the eSIM already installed, the sequence is: switch on, set mobile data to the travel line, make sure its data roaming is on, wait a minute while it finds a network. No WiFi at any point, the eSIM brings its own internet to the party.

Landed without installing? Your options, ranked

First choice: airport WiFi, imperfect but usually enough. An eSIM profile is under a megabyte, this is not a Netflix download, and even weak WiFi moves it in seconds. The failure mode is WiFi that needs an SMS code to log in when your home SIM has no roaming, in which case try the terminal's free network variants or a cafe.
