Mobile data in San Marino when you come up from Rimini

Yes, an eSIM works in San Marino. Our plan connects to TIM, Wind and Iliad, Italian networks that the ITU lists as available on its territory, and our catalogue shows 5G on all three. The catch is the border: San Marino is outside the EU, and outside our Europe plan too, so it needs a plan of its own.

01 Do Italian networks really cover San Marino?

Yes. San Marino has its own operators, but a 2020 ITU country profile notes that Italy's main networks, including TIM, WindTre and Iliad, are also available on its territory. Those are the three networks our plan uses here, and each one is listed with 5G in our catalogue.

Wind has been part of the single WindTre brand since March 2020, so the two names point to the same network. The Republic covers only 61 square kilometres, and the same ITU profile calls it Europe's pioneer location for 5G testing in 2018. In December 2018, TIM and Nokia said their 5G reached 99% of the territory from eight macro sites.

02 Is San Marino inside EU roaming or our Europe plan?

No to both. San Marino is not an EU member, and the EU's roam like at home rules cover EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine. Our Europe plan does not list San Marino either, so it will not cover your hours in the old town.

If your phone plan is from an EU country, ask your operator how it bills San Marino before you count on it. Our plans are paid for up front, so the price at checkout is the whole cost and no bill follows you home.

03 Coming up for the day from Rimini

Expect to arrive by road. San Marino has no airport of its own, and its old railway to Rimini closed after the Second World War. Coaches run by Bonelli and Benedettini link Rimini with San Marino several times a day, all year round. The ride takes about 50 minutes.

The nearest airport is Federico Fellini in Rimini, which is in Italy, so the data you need when you land is Italian data. For those days, our Italy plan is the one sold for Italy.

For the day itself, the one day unlimited plan at $1.29 is the easy pick. It gives you full speed up to 1 GB, then up to 1 Mbps for the rest of the day. If you send a lot of photos or video, the 3 GB a day version costs $2.38.

Install the eSIM the night before, but leave the line switched off until the coach reaches San Marino. That way the day of data is spent in the Republic.

04 Staying longer: which plan for which trip

For more than a day, compare fixed and unlimited before you pick. 1 GB for 7 days costs $1.29, while 7 days of unlimited at 1 GB a day costs $6.17. Unlimited only pays off if you would use more than a fixed plan holds.

Trip Plan Price
A weekend, maps and messages1 GB for 7 days$1.29
Up to two weeks3 GB for 15 days$2.10
A month of light use5 GB for 30 days$3.33
A month with video calls10 GB for 30 days$5.99
A week of heavy daily useUnlimited: 3 GB a day at full speed, then up to 1 Mbps, for 7 days$16.66

If you work online during a longer stay, 20 GB for 30 days costs $12.66. Every plan here is data only, so calls and messages go through apps like WhatsApp while your home SIM stays on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our San Marino eSIM.

Yes. We use TIM, Wind and Iliad there, all Italian networks that the ITU says are available across San Marino, and each is shown with 5G in our catalogue. Wind merged into the WindTre brand in March 2020, so both names refer to one network.

No. San Marino is not in the EU, and roam like at home covers only EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine. With an EU phone plan, check your operator's San Marino rate first. Our plans are prepaid, so there is nothing extra to pay later.

It arrived early. In December 2018, TIM and Nokia said their 5G covered 99% of San Marino's territory from eight macro sites. The ITU called the Republic Europe's pioneer location for 5G testing that same year. The whole country covers just 61 square kilometres.
