No. That is the short version, and it is the question almost everyone arrives with. Google, Gmail, Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook all work normally on this plan, with no VPN installed and nothing to configure.

The reason is where your data comes out, not what is installed on your phone. A Chinese SIM puts your traffic on the mainland internet, behind the filtering. Yes, using a roaming eSIM in China is legal and ordinary. It is the same thing that happens when any foreign visitor lands with their home SIM still in the phone and switches roaming on. You are a visitor using a foreign network under a roaming agreement, which is exactly what the system expects.

Two things get tangled together in forum threads and are worth separating. Chinese carriers have been slow to issue eSIM profiles on their own domestic plans, which is where "eSIM is not allowed in China" comes from. That is about buying a Chinese line as a resident. It has nothing to do with a foreign travel eSIM roaming in, which works fine.

No. This is a data only plan, so there is no Chinese number and no Chinese SMS. Your own number stays on your home SIM and keeps receiving texts as normal, which is what you actually want for bank codes and two factor logins.

That matters for Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both will register against your existing foreign number, and the signup code arrives on your home line, so leave that line switched on for texts even though you are using the eSIM for data. Set both up before you fly if you can, because doing it for the first time on arrival is the slowest possible moment to try.

Yes, from iPhone XR onward on a carrier unlocked handset, and every iPhone 14 and later sold in the United States has no SIM tray at all, so an eSIM is the only option on those. Install at home over WiFi, leave the line switched off, then turn it on and turn on data roaming for that line when you land.
