Italy eSIM

Our eSIM runs on TIM, Wind and Iliad, all three on 5G. Having three national networks on one profile matters more in Italy than in most countries, because coverage varies sharply between the north and the south.

5G is live across Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Naples, Turin and Bologna. 4G covers the rest, including Sicily and Sardinia.

The real gaps are in the Apennines, parts of Calabria and Basilicata, and the higher Dolomite valleys. Those are mountain problems rather than Italian ones.

If your phone plan comes from an EU country, no. EU roaming rules already give you your home allowance in Italy at no extra cost.

If you are coming from the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil or most of Asia, then yes, unless you are happy paying a daily roaming charge or being throttled.

UK travellers need to check. Some UK networks kept free EU roaming after Brexit, others reinstated daily fees.

We would rather be honest about this than take money for something you already have.

For a week taking in Rome and Florence the 3 GB for 15 days at $2.10 is usually enough. The 10 GB for 30 days at $5.99 suits a longer trip or anyone navigating by phone every day.

Airalo works in Italy and is a reasonable product. It is data only like ours, it installs the same way, and its coverage comes from the same national networks. The difference is what you pay.

Our 3 GB for 30 days is $2.24. We spend far less on advertising than the brands you have heard of, and the price reflects that rather than any difference in the network you ride on.

Generally no. Fiumicino, Malpensa and Naples all have TIM, Wind and Vodafone desks, but Italian law requires passport registration for prepaid SIMs, so you are doing paperwork straight off a flight.

Queues at Fiumicino in summer are genuinely long, and the starter packs cost more than our plans before you have used a single gigabyte.

An eSIM installs at home and connects while the plane taxis, so you walk out with maps and your hotel address already loaded. The one thing a local SIM gives you that an eSIM data plan does not is an Italian phone number.

Yes, and nothing about your account changes. WhatsApp runs over data, so it behaves exactly as it does at home.

Your number stays the same, your chats stay the same, you are not logged out, and no second account appears. The app simply uses whatever data connection is available.

WhatsApp calls and video calls work, as do FaceTime, Telegram and Signal. An hour of video calling is around 300 MB.

Our Italy plans are data only, so there is no Italian number for ordinary calls and texts. Keep your usual SIM active if you need one.

On for the eSIM line, off for your home SIM. It reads wrong and it is right.

The eSIM joins an Italian network as a visitor, so the phone logs it as roaming even though nothing extra is charged. Leaving roaming off for that line is the commonest reason an eSIM shows bars but no data.

Your home SIM is the line that would genuinely cost money, so turn its roaming off. Both iPhone and Android handle this per line.

Worth knowing before you buy rather than after you land.

• Your phone has to support eSIM. Most from 2019 onward do, but check.
• Installing needs an existing internet connection, so do it at home on WiFi.
• Data only, so no Italian number for calls or texts.
• A carrier locked phone can refuse to install any eSIM at all.
• Delete the profile by mistake and you can usually reinstall it, but not onto a different phone.

None of that is specific to us. It applies to every travel eSIM on the market.

About 3 GB for normal use. Italy is a walking and looking country, and you spend less time on your phone than you expect.

• Light use, maps and messaging and bookings: roughly 1 GB a week
• Normal use, adding photos to Instagram, taxis and a daily call home: 3 to 5 GB
• Heavy use, streaming or tethering a laptop: 10 GB or more

One Italian specific: if you are driving, your phone becomes the thing that keeps you out of a ZTL restricted traffic zone and out of a fine. Navigation runs constantly on driving days, so add a couple of gigabytes if you have hired a car.

Yes. Both islands are part of Italy and are covered by the same plan with nothing extra to buy.

Palermo, Catania, Cagliari and Olbia all have solid 4G and 5G. The interior of both islands is a different story, particularly the Madonie mountains in Sicily and the Barbagia in Sardinia.

If you are driving either island, download the maps before you leave the coast road.

Good almost everywhere a visitor goes, with a few specific caveats.

• Rome: 5G across the city, including most of the metro, patchy inside the Vatican Museums
• Milan: 5G throughout and very reliable
• Venice: good, though the narrow calli between tall buildings can drop to 4G
• Florence and Tuscany: strong in the city, thinner on the hill roads toward Siena
• Amalfi coast: fine in the towns, genuinely patchy on the cliff road between them
• Sicily and Sardinia: strong in coastal cities, gaps inland
• Dolomites: good in the valleys, unreliable on the high passes

On the Amalfi coast in particular, load your route before you set off rather than mid corner.

At home, on WiFi, before you fly. It takes two minutes and nothing starts counting until you arrive in Italy.

We email a QR code after you buy. In your phone settings, add an eSIM or mobile plan, scan it, and label the line clearly. Leave it switched off until you land if you prefer.

When you arrive, turn the line on, set mobile data to it, and switch data roaming on for that line only.

Do the install while you still have WiFi. An eSIM is a download, and you cannot download it using the connection you are trying to obtain.

Validity begins when the eSIM first connects to an Italian network, not at purchase and not at install. Buying ahead costs you nothing.

Run low and you can top up the same eSIM from your account with no new install. If the days expired rather than the data, buy a fresh plan.

You have 180 days from purchase to install the profile before it lapses.
