eSIM for Italy

One honest caveat that applies everywhere: unlimited plans have fair use rules. Ours runs at full speed up to 1 GB a day and then slows to 1 Mbps. If you stream video for hours every day, a big fixed bucket serves you better than any capped unlimited, from us or anyone else.

Almost all recent phones support eSIM. That includes iPhone XS and newer, most Google Pixel phones from the Pixel 3 onward, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer models. Your phone also needs to be carrier unlocked, which means it is not tied to one home network.

There is a quick way to check on an iPhone. Open Settings, go to General, then About, and scroll down. If you see an EID number listed, your phone can use an eSIM. On Android, look under the SIM or network settings for an Add eSIM option.

Heavy users on a long stay should look at the 50 GB plan for 30 days at $23.80. That is the right choice for remote workers, big families on one phone, or anyone who watches a lot of video without wifi.

Coverage in Italy's cities is excellent. Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Bologna have near full 5G, and you will get fast data in tourist spots like the Colosseum, the Duomo in Milan, and the canals of Venice. TIM has the widest reach of the three networks your eSIM uses.

Signal can drop in a few places. Expect slower or patchy data deep inside thick stone churches and museums, on regional trains passing through tunnels, and in the mountains of the Dolomites and parts of the Apennines. Remote stretches of Tuscany and Sardinia can also fall back to slower 4G.

On a high speed train between Rome and Florence or Milan, your data will come and go as the train moves. This is normal for any network in Italy, not a fault with the eSIM. Download your maps and tickets before you board.

Install it at home before you fly, but wait to switch it on until you reach Italy. Installing means adding the eSIM to your phone over wifi. That part is best done in advance while you have a steady connection and time to spare.

Many plans start counting their days from the moment you first connect in Italy, so turning the eSIM on too early can waste a day of your plan. Install now, turn on data after you land at Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, or whichever airport you arrive at.
