Yes, an eSIM works in Vatican City, on Italian networks. The Vatican has no mobile network of its own, so our plan connects to TIM, Wind and Iliad, each listed with 5G in our catalogue. Plan for one thing in particular: the Vatican Museums have no WiFi anywhere, so your own data is your only connection inside.
Italy's. Vatican City has no mobile operators of its own, and coverage inside its walls comes from Italian networks. Our plan uses three of them, TIM, Wind and Iliad, and our catalogue lists 5G on all three. Wind has been part of the single WindTre brand since March 2020.
The Vatican even borrows Italy's phone code. Its numbers sit inside Rome's 06 area under +39, and the +379 code set aside for it is not in use. Our plan is data only, so calls go through apps such as WhatsApp.
The Vatican Museums state that, for security reasons, no museum area has WiFi coverage. That makes mobile data your only way to open a map or message your group on the way round. Download anything you need before you queue.
The same rules page asks every visitor to put their phone on silent. In the Sistine Chapel, phones are not allowed at all, and photos or filming with any electronic device are forbidden. Elsewhere you may take photos for personal use, but never with flash.
Buy tickets only at tickets.museivaticani.va. The museums call it the only official site for buying tickets online and warn about scam sites on lookalike addresses. Keep your booking saved on the phone too, since there is no museum WiFi to fall back on.
