eSIM for Germany

If you live in the EU and your phone plan is from an EU country, you almost certainly do not. Roam Like At Home means your own allowance works in Germany at your normal domestic rates, and buying a German eSIM on top of that is money for nothing. Check your operator's fair use terms for long stays, then stop reading and enjoy your trip.

You do need something if you are coming from outside the EU. A US, UK, Gulf, Asian or Australian plan will either charge you a daily roaming pass or a per megabyte rate, and Germany is not a country where you want to find that out afterwards.

A German prepaid SIM is the other option and it is harder than people expect. Under German telecoms law a provider has to verify an identity document before a prepaid line is activated, so there is no walking into a shop and walking out connected in two minutes. Travellers regularly report being refused with an EU national ID card and asked for a passport, or being told a German address is needed and a hotel will not do. Telekom does sell a prepaid eSIM, but reporting on it says the QR code is posted to you rather than delivered instantly, which is useless to a visitor.

So the short version. EU resident: do nothing. Everyone else: a travel eSIM, or a German prepaid SIM if you have the time and paperwork appetite.

Fixed data, where you get every gigabyte at full speed:

Unlimited, in two tiers. This is the part that confuses people, so read the middle column. Both tiers are unlimited in the sense that they never cut you off. What differs is how much full speed data you get each day before the connection slows to about 1 Mbps for the rest of that day.

Run the arithmetic before you pick an unlimited plan, because in Germany the fixed plans are unusually good value. Our 50 GB for 30 days at $23.80 gives you fifty gigabytes at full speed with no daily ceiling at all. An unlimited plan for the same month gives you either 30 GB or 90 GB of full speed data depending on the tier, and then slows down. For most travellers the 10 GB plan at $5.99 is the sensible purchase and everything above it is insurance.

What every plan is: O2 and Vodafone, data only. No German phone number, no SMS, no voice calling. Hotspot and tethering are allowed. Top up is available on some plans but not all, so pick one that offers it if you expect to extend. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects in Germany, not when you buy it.

Germany has four mobile networks: Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, O2 which is Telefonica Germany, and 1&1 which built its own. Which one your travel eSIM lands on decides your real world speed, and no comparison page publishes this in one place. Taken from each brand's own page on 13 September 2026.

We publish O2 and Vodafone because those are the networks these plans use. We do not claim Telekom, and you should be sceptical of anyone who claims all four without saying so on the plan itself.

This is the single most useful thing on this page and it is not about our product at all. It is the most common way travellers get a surprise bill in Germany while holding a perfectly good eSIM.

On an iPhone there is a setting called Allow Cellular Data Switching. When it is on, the phone is free to fall back to your home line for data whenever it decides the other line is weak. You are roaming on your expensive home plan without touching anything, and the first you know is the bill.

Turn it off. Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data, then switch off Allow Cellular Data Switching. Then confirm your German line is the one selected for Cellular Data.

While you are in there, the other half of the same problem: turn Data Roaming ON for the German eSIM line and OFF for your home line. That combination gives you data on the plan you paid for and nothing on the one you did not.

You will see German 5G coverage quoted as everything from 87 percent to over 99 percent. Both kinds of figure are real. They are measuring different things and nobody says which.

Population coverage asks what share of people live where 5G reaches. Area coverage asks what share of the country's surface has it. Germany has forests, farmland and mountains where very few people live, so the population number is always far higher than the area number. An operator marketing page will quote population. The regulator publishes area. Neither is lying and neither answers the question on its own.

For a visitor, here is what actually matters. All four German networks run 5G. Whether you get it on a travel eSIM depends on the host network's roaming configuration and your handset, not on a badge on a product page. We are not going to promise you 5G on a roaming profile, and we would treat any brand that does as having told you something it cannot know.

In practice, in German cities you will have a fast, modern network either way. On a regional train through the countryside you will not, regardless of which brand you bought from.

Germany has nine neighbours and most trips touch at least one of them. A Germany only plan stops at the border, and it stops silently.

Day trips to Salzburg, Strasbourg, Prague, Amsterdam or Basel are exactly where people find out. Your phone will show a network, it will not have data, and you will assume the eSIM has failed when it has simply done what it was sold to do.

If your itinerary crosses a border at all, buy regional coverage rather than a single country plan. It is the most common avoidable mistake on a German trip and not one competing page mentions it.

One border is worth calling out separately: Switzerland is not in the EU and is not always included in European plans even when it looks like it should be. Read the country list rather than the plan title.

Germany is a well connected country and the honest summary is that it is good in the places you will be and patchy in a few places that surprise people.

• Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne and the big cities: strong, and 5G is widespread for local subscribers.
• The autobahn network and main intercity routes: generally solid.
• Regional and rural rail lines: the well known weak point, and a long standing national complaint rather than anything to do with your eSIM.
• Rural Bavaria, the Alps, the Harz and forested areas: real gaps remain.
• U-Bahn and S-Bahn tunnels: varies by city, and coverage underground is not guaranteed anywhere.

We will not publish a coverage percentage, for the reason set out above. Any single number you see quoted for German coverage is answering a question you did not ask.

Local German prepaid is genuinely cheap. ALDI TALK, sold in the supermarket, lists bundles such as 25 GB for four weeks at under ten euros and 50 GB for under fifteen, read from its own site on 13 September 2026.

The catch is activation. German law requires an identity check before a prepaid line works, so the SIM in the supermarket bag is inert until you complete an identity verification by app, video call or in person. That is fine if you have a few days and a working data connection to do it with, and it is a problem on the day you land.

Travellers also report being refused outright as non residents, being asked for a German address, or being told an EU national ID card is not acceptable even though the law treats it as valid identification. Experiences vary by shop and by staff member, which is not something you can plan around.

So a local SIM makes sense for a long stay where you want a German number and can spend a day on it. For a short trip, a travel eSIM that works the moment you land is the better tool, and that is what we sell.

Our German eSIM is data only. No German number, no SMS, no voice calling. Calls and messages run over data through WhatsApp, FaceTime or anything similar.

Two things this genuinely breaks in Germany. Some German services send a verification code by SMS and will not accept or deliver to a foreign number, which can block a signup you were counting on. And some hotel rooms have no phone and expect you to call reception from your mobile, which is awkward with no local number, although any hotel will give you a wifi password.

Keep your home line active alongside the eSIM, with data roaming off on it, and your own number still receives calls and bank codes at no cost while the German line carries data.

Install at home on wifi before you fly. The QR code arrives by email within minutes and installing early costs you nothing, because the clock starts when the eSIM first connects in Germany.

On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code, and scan the code. Label the line Germany. Select it for Cellular Data, turn Data Roaming on for it, and turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off as described above.

On Android, including Pixel and Samsung: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM or Download a SIM instead, and scan the code. Select it for mobile data and enable data roaming for that SIM.

Data roaming must be on for the German line. This is a roaming profile, so with roaming off it will never connect. It is the most common support question we get and it takes ten seconds to check.

Landing at Frankfurt or Munich, switch the line on and give it a couple of minutes. If it does not attach, restart, toggle airplane mode, and confirm the German line is the one selected for data.

• If you have an EU phone plan you do not need a German eSIM at all. Roam Like At Home already covers you.
• A German prepaid SIM is not instant. The law requires an identity check before activation, and Telekom's prepaid eSIM is reported to arrive by post rather than in the app.
• 5G coverage figures are not contradictory, they are measuring area and population. And a roaming profile does not automatically get 5G regardless.
• A Germany only plan stops at the border, silently, and Germany has nine neighbours.
• The surprise roaming bill usually comes from your own phone quietly switching back to your home line, not from the eSIM failing.
