eSIM for Spain

Most travelers in Spain pick one of four options. You can use your home plan and pay roaming fees. You can buy a local SIM card once you arrive. You can rent a pocket wifi device. Or you can install a travel eSIM before your flight.

Roaming is the easy one to rule out. If you are coming from outside Europe, your home carrier can charge a lot per day, and the bill is a nasty surprise. Signal can drop in the deep countryside, in mountain areas like parts of the Pyrenees, and inside some thick stone buildings and old churches. This is true for any network, not just ours. For most trips, you will rarely notice a gap.

A Spanish SIM from an Orange or Movistar shop can give you a big chunk of data for a fair price. The catch is the effort. You have to find a store, go during opening hours, and show your passport, because Spain requires SIM cards to be registered.

That can eat an hour or more of your first day. You also have to pop out your home SIM and keep it safe. With the eSIM you stay on your normal number for calls and texts, and the Spain data plan runs right next to it. Nothing physical to swap, nothing to lose.

Pocket wifi rentals run around $7 a day, and that is before you factor in the deposit and the return. You have to pick the device up, carry it everywhere, charge it every night, and bring it back before you fly home. Lose it and you pay for it.

Do the setup at home on your own wifi, not at the airport. After you buy, you get a QR code. On an iPhone, open Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. On most Android phones, open Settings, then Network, then SIMs, then add a SIM and scan.

That is the install. It does not start using your data yet. The plan only begins counting once you switch it on, which you do when you arrive. So you can set everything up days before your trip without burning a single megabyte.

When you land at Madrid Barajas or Barcelona El Prat, go into your phone settings, find the Spain eSIM line, and turn on data roaming for that line only. This sounds odd, but for a travel eSIM that switch is what tells your phone to use the local Orange or Movistar network. It does not trigger any fees.

Within a minute or two you should see the carrier name appear and the signal bars fill in. Open a map or a browser to confirm you are online. Keep your home SIM set to no data so it does not quietly rack up charges in the background.
