An eSIM is a SIM that is already inside your phone. There is no plastic card to push in or take out. You buy a Japan plan, we email you a QR code, you scan it, and your phone is ready for data in Japan.
Your normal SIM stays in the phone, so you keep your usual number for calls and texts while the eSIM handles the internet. Most phones from the last few years support it, including recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models. Dial *#06# and if you see an EID number you are good to go.
Your eSIM runs on the big local networks in Japan, which are NTT docomo, SoftBank, KDDI/au and Rakuten Mobile. That means you get the same coverage that people who live in Japan use every day.
Signal is strong across Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, and it holds up on the bullet train, on subways and in most rural and mountain areas. You get fast 4G LTE everywhere and 5G where it is switched on.
Most travelers use less than they expect. For a one week trip, light use like maps, messaging and train times sits around 1 GB to 3 GB. Normal use with social media, photos and some video is about 5 GB to 10 GB. If you stream a lot or work on the road, pick 20 GB or an unlimited plan.

Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo all have strong coverage. You stay connected on the Yamanote line, in the Tokyo subway, on the shinkansen between cities, and at places like Mount Fuji, Nara and Hakone.
Coverage reaches most rural towns and ski areas too. Signal can dip deep in the countryside and far out in the mountains, which is normal anywhere.
