Since 2012 it has been an overseas country and territory rather than part of the EU. So your home plan's roaming price there depends on who issued your SIM, not on the island being French.

01 Does my French or EU plan work on Saint Barth at home prices?

A French plan does, but other EU plans vary. Arcep says French rules give customers travelling from mainland France home prices on Saint Barth, with a possible fair use limit on data. Other EU operators decide for themselves: Belgium's Proximus lists Saint Barth in its EU zone, while Luxembourg's POST lists French Saint Martin but not Saint Barth.

The reason is a change on 1 January 2012, when Saint Barth stopped being an EU outermost region and became an overseas country and territory. That is why operators outside France treat it differently. Look for Saint Barthelemy itself in your operator's country list before you fly, not just France.

02 How strong is Orange's signal around Gustavia?

Strong, on the regulator's figures. In Arcep's 2025 tests, run from January to April, Orange came first on every voice, SMS and data indicator measured on Saint Barth, and Dauphin was second on most data indicators. Orange's 5G covers Gustavia, Saint-Jean and the area between Saint-Jean bay and the Grand Galet and Petit Galet coves.

Orange itself says quality varies from place to place and that 5G is spreading in stages. When Arcep first measured 5G on St Barth in 2025, it found speeds no better than 4G so far. A 5G phone helps a little, but an older 4G phone will do the job. Orange suggests checking its coverage map for a specific address, which is worth doing before you book a villa.

03 Arriving via Sint Maarten or Grand-Case

If you connect through the neighbouring island, keep this plan's line switched off until you reach Saint Barth. St Barth Commuter flies in from Juliana airport (SXM) on the Dutch side and Grand-Case (SFG) on the French side, a 15 minute hop. Switching on early could start the plan's days before you arrive.
