A traveller lands at Suvarnabhumi, pulls out the hotel confirmation, dials the Thai number printed on it and gets nothing. The number is right. The phone is fine. The problem is a single digit that should have been removed, and it is the most common reason a call to Thailand fails. This guide covers the country code, the zero that trips everyone up, how many digits a Thai number really has, the area code for every city you are likely to visit, and how to call home once you are there.
Thailand country code: +66
Thailand's international dialling code is +66. To call Thailand from anywhere, dial the plus sign, then 66, then the Thai number with its leading zero removed.
- Dial + (on a mobile) or your country's exit code, such as 011 from the United States and Canada, or 00 from the UK, Europe and Australia.
- Dial 66, the country code for Thailand.
- Drop the leading 0 from the Thai number.
- Dial the rest of the number exactly as written.
That is the whole rule. A mobile written in Thailand as 081 234 5678 becomes +66 81 234 5678. A Bangkok landline written as 0 2 670 8888 becomes +66 2 670 8888.
That second example is not invented. It is the published switchboard of the NBTC, Thailand's telecom regulator, and the regulator writes it in exactly that international format itself. If you want a number to test the rule against, that is the safest one on the internet.
The zero is not part of the numberThailand's trunk prefix is 0. It exists only for dialling inside Thailand. It is not part of the international number, so it disappears the moment you add +66. Keeping it, as in the invalid +66 02 670 8888, is the single most common formatting error, and several of the largest pages ranking for this question print it that way.
How many digits is a Thai phone number?
This is where most reference pages get it wrong, because the answer is different for mobiles and landlines.

So a Thai mobile is nine digits once the trunk zero is gone, and a landline is eight. If you have typed a number and it is the wrong length, count again before you blame the network.
You will see "8 digits" quoted a lotSeveral large pages ranking for this question state that a Thai number is eight digits. That is true for landlines and wrong for mobiles, which are nine. The numbering plan published by the regulator sets both lengths explicitly.
What does a Thai mobile number start with?
Thai mobile numbers begin 06, 08 or 09 as written inside Thailand. After +66 those become 6, 8 and 9.
The 08 and 09 ranges are the long established ones. The 06 range was opened later, when the regulator added roughly fifty million new mobile numbers to the pool, and it is now completely normal to meet Thai mobiles starting 061 through 066. Some older reference pages, including material still ranking today, list the 06 range as reserved for internet calling. In practice you will be handed 06 mobile numbers in Thailand constantly.
A prefix does not tell you the networkYou will find pages claiming 081 means one operator and 086 means another. Thailand has full mobile number portability, so numbers move freely between AIS, True and dtac branded service. A prefix tells you it is a mobile. It tells you nothing about who runs it.
Thailand area codes, city by city
Thailand uses a closed dialling plan, which means the area code is required even when you are standing in the same city and calling a landline down the road. Inside Thailand you dial it with its leading zero. From abroad you drop that zero.

One correction worth making, because it is repeated on a site that ranks near the top for this exact question: Chiang Rai is 053, the same area code as Chiang Mai. It is not 054.
Thai landlines did not become 10 digitsYou may have read that Thai landline numbers changed from nine digits to ten on 1 January 2025. That change was scheduled, then postponed by the regulator in a revision that took effect in March 2024. Landlines are still nine digits inside Thailand. Operators will only move to ten if the supply of numbers runs short, and the regulator will announce it in advance if that happens.
Calling out of Thailand: the exit code maze
Calling home from Thailand is stranger than calling in, because Thailand does not have one international access code. It has several, each belonging to a different carrier, at different prices and different quality.
The two you are most likely to meet are both run by National Telecom:

Other numeric codes exist and are sold by other carriers. Two that you will still find listed in old guides, 007 and 008, were withdrawn in June 2021 and will not connect you.
Just use the plus signOn a mobile you never need any of this. Dial + then the country code: +1 for the United States and Canada, +44 for the United Kingdom, +61 for Australia, +49 for Germany. The plus sign resolves to whatever access code your network uses, and it works from any country on earth, so it is the only thing worth memorising.
The Thai numbers you cannot call from abroad
Thai organisations publish short hotline numbers that are three or four digits long and start with 1. You will see them everywhere: airline call centres, government hotlines, tourist information, the operators' own support lines.
None of them can be reached from outside Thailand. They sit below the minimum length of a normal Thai number, so they have no international form at all. Writing +66 in front of one does not make it work.
The organisations know this, which is why the serious ones publish a full number alongside the hotline. One Thai operator lists a four digit code for customers inside Thailand and a full +66 mobile number for customers overseas. The Tourism Authority of Thailand pairs its hotline with a +66 2 Bangkok landline. If you need to reach a Thai organisation from home, look for that second number rather than trying to dial the short one.
Two ranges to recogniseNumbers beginning 1800 are Thailand's domestic toll free range and numbers beginning 1900 are premium rate. Neither behaves the way a toll free number does at home, and neither is reachable from abroad.
Emergency numbers in Thailand
These are short numbers, they work inside Thailand, and they are worth putting in your phone before you travel.

One genuinely useful detail that almost nobody publishes: a Thai data only SIM with no voice plan can still reach the emergency services. One operator's own tourist SIM terms state that outgoing calls are barred except to emergency numbers, and lists 191, 1669 and 112 among them. So a data plan does not leave you unable to call for help.
Do not add +66 to an emergency numberDial 191 or 1669 exactly as written, with nothing in front. They are short codes, so they behave like the 1xxx numbers above and only work inside Thailand. And do not rely on a page telling you 911 works in Thailand. The published Thai emergency numbers are the ones above.
Calling home from Thailand without paying for calls
Almost nobody dials internationally from Thailand any more, and the exit code maze above is a good reason why. What travellers actually do is call over data.
WhatsApp, FaceTime and Messenger all work normally. So does LINE, which matters more in Thailand than anywhere else, because LINE is the dominant messaging app there. Hotels, tour operators, drivers and restaurants will frequently ask for your LINE rather than your phone number. It is worth installing before you arrive.
All of those need data, not a phone plan, which is why a data eSIM is usually the cheaper answer than international roaming. If you would rather just switch everything off, airplane mode does stop roaming fees, though it stops your phone too. You keep your own number live on your normal SIM for calls and bank codes, and the eSIM carries the data. Keep your own number switched onBank verification codes are the reason. Many banks send one time passcodes from short codes that cannot deliver to a foreign number, and a Thai number will not receive your home bank's code either. Keep your home SIM active for texts, with its data roaming switched off so it cannot run up charges, and let the eSIM do the data. If you are unsure which switch does what, data roaming on or off when you travel walks through it.
