eSIM for Australia

Ours runs on Optus, on 5G. We are going to be straight about what that means rather than leave you to find out, because in Australia the network you are on matters more than in almost any other country we sell.

Australia has three networks: Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. In the cities and along the populated east coast there is very little between them, and Optus is a strong, modern network with good 5G in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Outside that, Telstra is simply better. It has the widest rural and remote footprint by a clear margin, and in parts of the outback it is the only network that exists at all. We do not have Telstra, and no amount of marketing would change that.

Along the sealed highways and in the towns, yes. Genuinely remote Australia, no, and neither will most things.

This is the part where we would rather lose the sale than have you rely on us. If your trip is the Red Centre, the Nullarbor, the Kimberley, Cape York or long stretches of outback driving, a Telstra service is the right answer and a travel eSIM on Optus is not.

• Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and the east coast: strong, 5G widely
• Great Ocean Road, Blue Mountains, Byron, the Gold Coast: fine
• Tasmania: good around Hobart and Launceston, patchier in the highlands
• Uluru, Kakadu, the Kimberley, the Nullarbor: expect nothing for long stretches on any network
• Serious outback driving: carry a satellite communicator, not a better eSIM

Australians who drive remotely carry a satellite messenger or an EPIRB for exactly this reason. No eSIM from anyone replaces one, and a page telling you otherwise would be selling you something dangerous.

Worked out on 21 September 2026. Australia is a country people visit for weeks rather than days, so the 10 GB plan at $6.58 is the realistic starting point and $23.80 for 50 GB is worth it for a working holiday or a long road trip.

If you are staying more than a month, or if your trip is genuinely remote, yes, and get a Telstra one.

Australian prepaid SIMs are easy to buy, widely sold in supermarkets and post offices, and come with generous data. There is no onerous registration for a visitor. The main cost is that you need to be in the country to buy one, which does not help on arrival day.

For a two or three week trip staying on the populated side of the country, a travel eSIM is simpler and cheaper. For three months in a campervan, buy Telstra prepaid when you land.

Coming from Europe, North America or the Gulf, yes. Australia is a long way outside any roaming arrangement you might have and the standard rates are punishing.

It also matters more than usual because distances here are large and you will be navigating constantly, often between towns where there is nothing in between.

• Worth it: a road trip on the populated coasts, where you will use maps all day
• Worth it: you land at an awkward hour and need transport sorted
• Probably not: over a month, where a local Telstra prepaid is better and cheaper
• Probably not: a genuinely remote itinerary, where you need Telstra or satellite

More than for a European trip, because the driving legs are longer and maps run for hours at a time.

Download the map of your route offline before a long drive. It saves data and, more importantly, it keeps working through the stretches where nothing does.

No. These are data plans, so no number and no calls or texts to a normal number. WhatsApp, FaceTime and Messenger work over the data.

Australia is a country where a local number is occasionally useful, for a campsite booking or a tour operator calling to confirm. A cheap prepaid SIM from a supermarket covers that if you need it, and you can run it alongside the eSIM.

Keep your home SIM on for bank codes with its own data roaming turned off.

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. The instinct to leave it off is backwards and it is the most common reason a working eSIM looks broken.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile on an Australian partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming permanently. With it off, the eSIM shows signal and moves no data. The setting is per line, so your home SIM is unaffected.

Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data with roaming on, home SIM on for texts with its own roaming off.

Flights into Sydney and Melbourne often land early morning after a long haul. Having this done before you board means you walk off the plane connected.

Keep the email. The profile cannot move to another phone and the code will not scan twice.

Install at home. Australia is usually the far end of a long journey with stopovers, and you do not want a plan burning days while you are in Dubai or Singapore.

The clock then runs in calendar days rather than 24 hour blocks.

No. New Zealand is a separate country with separate networks, and this plan stops at the border in the same way a plan for France stops at the Swiss one.

A lot of people do both on one trip. Buy a plan for each and install both before you leave, then switch which line carries data after you land in Auckland or Christchurch.

If you are doing Australia, New Zealand and a Pacific stop, a regional plan may work out simpler, though usually at a higher price per gigabyte.

Yes, hotspot and tethering are allowed on every Australia plan here and come from the same allowance.

On a working holiday, $23.80 for 50 GB is the plan. Campsite and hostel wifi in Australia is often slow enough that people end up tethering anyway, and 10 GB disappears quickly on video calls.

If your trip is the outback in any serious way, buy Telstra prepaid when you arrive, or carry satellite. We run on Optus and we are not going to pretend that is the same thing.

If you are staying more than a month, an Australian prepaid SIM will cost less and is easy to buy in any supermarket.

For a two or three week trip on the populated side of Australia, this is a good buy and $6.58 for 10 GB over 30 days is what most people should look at. It costs a fraction of the alternatives and Optus will serve you well everywhere you are likely to go.

If your Australia is the empty one, the Red Centre, the Kimberley, the long straight roads where the next fuel stop is three hours away, then buy Telstra instead. That is not us, and we would rather tell you now than have you find out somewhere with no signal.
