A carrier support agent once told a customer that the only safe way to travel was to keep the phone in airplane mode the whole trip, otherwise roaming fees could appear at random. That conversation became the Reddit thread that ranks first for this question, and the replies split into two camps. One camp said turn data roaming off and you will never be charged. The other said that is not true, phones leak. Both camps were partly right, and that is why people get surprise bills. This post explains what airplane mode actually switches off, how the surprise bills really happen, and the two minute landing routine that means you never need either camp.
What airplane mode actually does
Airplane mode cuts every radio in the phone at once: the cellular radio, WiFi and Bluetooth. With the cellular radio off, the phone cannot register on any network, foreign or otherwise, so it cannot roam and nothing can be billed. That part is simple and it works. The short answer to the title is yes.
The part people miss is that on every current iPhone and Android, you can switch WiFi and Bluetooth back on while airplane mode stays on. The cellular radio stays dead, the WiFi works. That is the setting most travellers actually want: no roaming possible, hotel WiFi fine, headphones fine. WhatsApp, iMessage, email and maps all work over WiFi. Calls work too if your carrier supports WiFi calling, and on most carriers WiFi calling to your home country is free.
The zero risk settingAirplane mode on, then tap WiFi back on. Leave it like that for the whole trip if you want zero risk. You lose only two things: ordinary calls and texts when you are away from WiFi, and the ability to use data on the move.
How the surprise bills actually happen
The surprise bill almost never comes from airplane mode failing. It comes from the phone being out of airplane mode with data roaming off, and the owner assuming that is the same thing. It is not. With data roaming off, the phone still registers on the foreign network for calls and texts. Three things can then cost money.
- Day pass triggers. US carriers' travel passes, at $12 a day on AT&T and Verizon, start a charged day the moment the phone uses any data, makes or receives a call, or sends a text on the foreign network. Receiving a call you did not answer can be enough on some plans. One accidental connection at 11pm is a full day, and the next day starts at 11pm tomorrow. - Data leakage. The second Reddit camp was describing something real. Some phones, and some carrier settings, allow small amounts of data through with roaming off, for things like visual voicemail, carrier services or MMS. It is a few kilobytes, but on a pay per megabyte tariff it is enough to open a charge, and on a day pass plan it is enough to start the day.
- Cruise ships and planes. A ship at sea runs its own cellular network with its own prices, often several dollars per megabyte and a few dollars a minute, and the standard carrier passes do not cover it. The phone connects to the ship automatically. This is the source of the four figure bills you read about.
The cruise ruleOn a cruise, airplane mode is not optional. Switch it on before the ship leaves port and use the ship WiFi for everything. The cellular at sea network is the single most expensive place a phone can be.

The landing routine that costs nothing
This is the setup we suggest to every customer, and it is the same whether you use our eSIM, someone else's, or a local SIM from a desk. It takes two minutes on the runway.
- Before you fly, on home WiFi: install your travel eSIM and leave the line switched off. Then on your home SIM line, switch Data Roaming off. iPhone: Settings, Cellular, your home line, Data Roaming off. Android: Settings, Connections or Network, Mobile networks, your home line, Data roaming off.
- Airplane mode on for the flight, WiFi on if the plane has it.
- On landing, airplane mode off. Your home SIM will register on the local network for calls and texts. That is fine, and it is how you still get bank codes.
- Switch the travel eSIM line on and set it as your cellular data line. iPhone: Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data, pick the eSIM. Android: SIM manager, Mobile data, pick the eSIM.
- Check the home line once more: Data Roaming still off. Done. Every byte now goes through the eSIM at the price you paid for it.
If you want a belt and braces version, also switch off Wi Fi Assist on iPhone (Settings, Cellular, scroll to the bottom) and Adaptive connectivity on Android, which stop the phone quietly switching to cellular when WiFi gets weak. What you give up in full airplane mode
People who keep airplane mode on all trip, per the support agent's advice, pay for it in a different currency. No maps on the street, no taxi app outside the hotel, no bank code when the card machine in the restaurant asks for one, no call from the driver who cannot find you. It is the safe setting for a bill and the unsafe setting for a day.

Are texts free to receive?Receiving texts abroad is free on almost every major carrier, and most carriers do not charge for a missed call either. So leaving the home line on with data roaming off costs nothing on its own. The charge only starts when data moves, or when a pass day triggers.
