eSIM for Latvia

The easiest time to install your Latvia eSIM is at home, days before you fly. You buy the plan, get a QR code by email, and add it to your phone while you still have your normal WiFi. Nothing turns on yet, so you will not waste any data. You just leave the new line installed and ready.

First check that your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. Most iPhones from the XS onward and most recent Samsung, Google Pixel, and Motorola phones work fine. On an iPhone go to Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. On Android look for Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM. Label the new line something clear like Latvia so it is easy to find later.

Within a minute or two your phone should latch onto Tele2 or LMT and show data bars. Now you can order a taxi or Bolt, message your hotel, or pull up the route to Riga Old Town before you even reach the baggage belt. No queue at a SIM kiosk and no cash needed.

It happens. If you land without the eSIM set up, RIX has free airport WiFi you can use to finish the job. Connect to the airport network, open the email with your QR code, and add the eSIM the same way you would have at home.

One small catch: you cannot scan a QR code that is sitting on the same phone you are setting up. If the code is on your only device, most plans also give you a manual setup option with an SM-DP+ address and activation code you can type in by hand. Save that email so you have it either way.

In Riga you get fast, easy data. Speeds in the capital often land in the 50 to 150 Mbps range, which is plenty for video calls, uploading photos, and streaming on the go. Tele2 and LMT both cover the city center, the train station, and the central market well.

Day trips along the coast are just as smooth. The beach town of Jurmala, a short train ride from Riga, has strong signal, and so do Jelgava and the road out to it. If you are walking the long sandy beach or sitting in a seaside cafe, you should stay connected the whole time.

This is where the network choice really matters. LMT has the widest reach in rural Latvia and the most reliable signal away from towns. When you visit Sigulda, hike the trails of Gauja National Park, or drive east toward Daugavpils, your phone will often prefer LMT for that broader coverage.

You will still get data in most villages, parks, and along the main highways. Deep forest spots and a few quiet back roads can drop to slow signal or none at all. A simple habit helps: download your offline Google Maps area for the region before you leave WiFi, so navigation keeps working even in a dead zone.

It is worth checking your usage every couple of days. On an iPhone, your cellular settings show how much each line has used. The biggest data eaters are video streaming, video calls, and auto playing social feeds. Use hotel and cafe WiFi for those and your plan will stretch much further.

Light users who mostly send messages and check maps can get through a full day on well under 1 GB. If you do burn through your plan, you do not need to start over. You can buy a top up plan, such as the 1 GB for 7 days at $1.29 or the 3 GB for 30 days at $2.24, and keep going without changing anything on your phone.

On your final day, keep the eSIM on so you can check in for your flight, pull up your boarding pass, and order a ride to RIX. The plan stays valid until its day count runs out, so there is no rush to switch anything off early.

When the trip ends, you do not have to throw away a plastic SIM or remember to swap your old one back in. Your normal home line was active the whole time underneath.
