eSIM for Samoa

The smart move is to buy and install your eSIM at home, days before you fly. You need wifi to install it, and you will have plenty of that at home. Once it is installed, it just sits on your phone and waits. It does not start using data or counting down its days until you arrive in Samoa and switch it on.

First check that your phone supports eSIM. Most phones from the last few years do, including recent iPhones, Google Pixels, and Samsung Galaxy models. Your phone must also be carrier unlocked. Faleolo International Airport sits about 40 minutes west of Apia, the capital. As your plane lands, you can turn the eSIM on. Now you can message your hotel, book a taxi, or load a map for the drive into town before you even leave the terminal. There is often wifi at the airport too, but having your own data means you are not stuck hunting for a password while juggling bags.

Samoa is a place where you spend more time in the water and on the sand than on your phone, so most people use less data here than at home. For a short stay where you only need maps, messaging, and the odd photo upload, the 1 GB for 7 days plan at $3.88 is plenty.

For a one or two week trip with daily check ins, social posts, and some video calls home, look at the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $10.33. There is also a 10 GB for 30 days option for heavy users. The shortest and cheapest plan is 1 GB for 1 day at $3.67, which suits a quick stopover or a backup top up.

On Upolu, the main island where most visitors stay, coverage is good. You will get a solid 4G signal in and around Apia, along the main roads, and at most of the popular beaches and resorts on the south coast like Lalomanu and the Aleipata area.

Savai'i, the larger and quieter island, has coverage in the towns and along the main coastal road, but it thins out as you head inland or into smaller villages. Expect dead spots near remote waterfalls, lava fields, and the deep interior. Download your offline maps and any booking details while you still have signal, so a quiet stretch of road does not leave you guessing.

Many trips include the ferry from Mulifanua wharf on Upolu across to Salelologa on Savai'i. The crossing takes around an hour and a half. You may lose signal in the middle of the channel, which is normal, so screenshot your ferry times and any directions before you board.

Once you reach Salelologa you will pick Bluesky back up in the town. From there, keep an eye on your signal as you explore. The further you get from the main road and the bigger villages, the more likely you are to drop to a weak signal or none at all.

You could buy a local Bluesky SIM card at a shop in Apia, but that means finding the store, showing ID, and swapping out your home SIM, all while jet lagged. With a MegaEsim eSIM you keep your normal number active for calls and texts, and your data simply runs on the second line.

Roaming with your home carrier is the other choice, and it is usually the most expensive by a wide margin.
