eSIM for Iceland

Most travelers come to Iceland expecting to pay a lot for data. Plenty of well known eSIM brands ask for $2.50 to $4 a day, which adds up fast on a week long trip. You do not need to spend that much.

Our smallest plan is 1 GB for 1 day at $1.29. If you only need maps for one busy day around Reykjavik or the Golden Circle, that single dollar covers it. For most people the better deal is buying more data for more days at once, because the price per gigabyte drops sharply as you scale up.

A quick example. The 1 GB for 7 days plan is $1.29, almost the same as one day. The 10 GB for 30 days plan is $5.99. That is a lot of data for the price of a single coffee at Keflavik airport.

Iceland is a country you explore by driving, so your biggest data use will be maps, weather checks, and the road and aurora forecast sites. These are light. Heavy use comes from streaming video, video calls, and uploading lots of photos and clips.

A light traveler who mainly uses maps, messaging, and a bit of social media will be fine on 3 GB. A 3 GB for 15 days plan at $2.10 fits a relaxed week or two on the Ring Road. If you post stories daily or check Google Maps constantly, step up to 5 GB.

For couples sharing one phone hotspot, digital nomads, or anyone working from a cabin near Vik or Akureyri, go bigger. The 10 GB for 30 days plan at $5.99 covers steady daily use, and the 50 GB for 30 days plan at $29.89 is built for video calls, remote work, and streaming.

Short stopover or one day in Reykjavik: the 1 GB for 1 days plan at $1.29 or the 3 GB for 1 days plan at $1.99 if you want a buffer.

Five to seven day Ring Road or South Coast trip: the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $2.10 for light users, or 5 GB for 30 days at $3.33 if you use maps and social media all day.

Two to four weeks of slow travel, the Westfjords, or working remotely: the 10 GB for 30 days plan at $5.99, and 50 GB for 30 days at $29.89 for heavy streaming and video calls. You can always start small and top up later if you run low.

Your eSIM connects to Nova and Síminn, the two networks that cover Iceland best. Síminn has the widest reach across the country. Nova has strong 5G in and around Reykjavik and the southwest, which is great for the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon.

You will have solid signal in Reykjavik, along most of the Ring Road, and in towns like Akureyri, Vik, Hofn, and Egilsstadir. The South Coast and Snaefellsnes peninsula are well covered too.

Signal gets thin in the Highlands, the F roads, remote stretches of the Westfjords, and inside long tunnels. Plan for these gaps. Download your maps and any aurora or road forecast pages before you head into empty areas, the same way you would with any provider.

Buy your plan before you fly while you still have wifi at home. You will get a QR code by email. On an iPhone open Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. On most Android phones open Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, and add the eSIM there. It takes about two minutes.

Label the new line Iceland so it is easy to find. Leave it switched off until you land. When you arrive at Keflavik, turn on the Iceland line, set it as your data line, and switch on data roaming for that line only. Your data starts working right away.

Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts if you want, but turn its data off so you are not charged. Check that your phone is unlocked before the trip, since a carrier locked phone cannot use an outside eSIM.

A physical SIM card bought at the airport works, but you wait in line, you pay more, and you swap out your home SIM. An eSIM is digital, so there is nothing to lose and you can set it up before you leave home.

Roaming with your home carrier is the most expensive path by far, often many dollars a day or steep per megabyte fees. Airport rental wifi devices cost more per day than our plans and are one more thing to carry and charge.
