The hill country is the tricky part. On the famous Kandy to Ella train ride, and around Nuwara Eliya and the tea estates, the signal comes and goes as the train winds through valleys and tunnels. National parks like Yala also have patchy coverage. This is normal for every network up there, not a fault with the eSIM. Save your offline maps before you head into the highlands.

Buy the plan online and you get a QR code by email. Scan it while you are still at home on solid WiFi, because installing the eSIM needs a good connection. On an iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. On Android the path is similar under Settings and Network.

Installing it early does not use up your data. The clock on your plan starts when the eSIM connects to Mobitel in Sri Lanka, not the moment you scan the code. So set it up at home, then leave it switched off until you arrive.
