Read your own plan name carefully before flying, because those buckets differ by a factor of three, and the tier names have changed twice in recent years. The allowance is monthly, not per trip, one long vacation does not reset it.
What 256 kbps actually feels like
At 256 kbps, WhatsApp text messages send fine. Email headers load, attachments crawl. A Google Maps route calculates in about a minute if the area is not cached, live traffic mostly does not come. Instagram loads one photo at a time on a good day. Video calls fail, video streaming is out of the question, and a 50 MB photo backup takes half an hour. It is 2G arithmetic: 256 kilobits is 32 kilobytes a second, and a modern web page weighs two to four megabytes.
