T-Mobile is the one big US carrier whose international roaming is genuinely free: texting and data in 215 plus destinations are included on most current plans at no daily fee. The catch is the speed. After a high speed allowance of 5 GB or 15 GB depending on your tier, data runs at up to 256 kbps, a speed the modern internet has largely forgotten how to use. So the honest question is not whether T-Mobile roaming works, it does, but what 256 kbps actually gets you, and we will answer that with specifics.

What each plan tier includes abroad
The current lineup gives Experience Beyond and the older Go5G Next up to 15 GB of high speed data abroad per month. Experience More, Go5G Plus and Magenta MAX get 5 GB. Base plans get the unlimited slow roaming with no high speed bucket at all. Every tier includes unlimited texting abroad, and voice calls bill separately, at 50 cents a minute in covered countries since 25 June 2026, up from 25 cents. Read your own plan name carefully before flying, because those buckets differ by a factor of three, and the tier names have changed twice in recent years. The allowance is monthly, not per trip, one long vacation does not reset it.
What 256 kbps actually feels like
At 256 kbps, WhatsApp text messages send fine. Email headers load, attachments crawl. A Google Maps route can take a minute to calculate if the area is not saved offline, and live traffic often does not load. Instagram loads one photo at a time on a good day. Video calls fail, video streaming is out of the question, and a 50 MB photo backup takes half an hour. It is 2G arithmetic: 256 kilobits is 32 kilobytes a second, and a modern web page weighs two to four megabytes.
None of this is an attack on T-Mobile, the free tier is a genuinely good safety net, and for a traveller who lives in messaging apps it can carry a whole trip. It is simply worth knowing which internet you are getting before you plan to navigate a rental car through Naples on it.
The math for different travellers
The light user, messages and occasional maps: T-Mobile's included roaming covers you entirely, spend nothing extra.
The normal holiday user, maps daily, photos up, some video: the 5 GB bucket empties in roughly a week of normal use. After that you are at 256 kbps for the rest of the month. The setup that uses both for free
Because T-Mobile's roaming has no daily fee, the dual line setup costs nothing extra, which makes it the best version of this arrangement on any US carrier. Keep the T-Mobile line on. Its texting and slow data are free, and only calls bill. Add a travel eSIM and point mobile data at it for full speed. One caution: voice calls abroad are not free on T-Mobile, they bill per minute even on top tiers. Let unknown numbers hit voicemail and call back over WhatsApp on the data line, and the per minute meter never starts.
Cruises and the gaps in the map
The included roaming covers land networks. Ships at sea use satellite operators that sit outside the deal and bill at genuinely alarming rates, T-Mobile's cruise rates run to several dollars per minute and per MB tiers, so airplane mode as you leave port is the rule regardless of plan.
