eSIM for Benin

When you land at Cadjehoun Airport in Cotonou, you have a few ways to get online. You can hunt for a Celtiis, MTN or Moov kiosk, show your passport, register the SIM and wait. You can rent a pocket wifi box that you have to carry and charge all day. Or you can leave your home plan on roaming and watch the bill climb fast.

The eSIM removes all of that. You set it up before you fly, then it switches on by itself once you reach Benin. There is no line, no language barrier at a counter, and no spare gadget to lose. Your normal SIM stays in the phone too, so you keep your home number for calls and bank codes.

The MegaEsim plan runs on Celtiis, one of the main mobile networks in Benin. You get solid 4G in Cotonou, the capital Porto-Novo, and the busy markets and beaches along the coast. Tourist spots like Ouidah and the Royal Palaces of Abomey are well covered too.

Signal gets weaker once you head into the north or into rural farm areas around Parakou and the Pendjari park. You will still get a connection in most towns, but speeds can drop. This is true for any network in Benin, including a local SIM card. A pocket wifi box does not help here either, since it uses the same towers.

Light users who mostly check maps, send WhatsApp and book a taxi can start with 1 GB. The 1 GB plan for 7 days at $5.59 is a good fit for a short stay or a backup. If you only need it for a single travel day, 1 GB for 1 day is $5.04.

Most travelers do better with a mid size plan. The 3 GB plan for 30 days at $15.86 covers a couple of weeks of daily maps, messaging and a bit of social media. If you stream video, share your hotspot with a laptop, or post a lot, go for 5 GB for 30 days at $24.88. Heavy users and small groups can pick 10 GB for 30 days at $49.74.

A local Benin SIM can look cheaper per gigabyte. The catch is the time and effort. You need your passport for registration, you have to find a top up agent, and the menus and support are often in French. For a trip of a few days, that hassle eats into any savings.

Home roaming is the most expensive choice by far. Many carriers charge daily roaming fees in Benin that can cost more than a whole MegaEsim plan in two or three days. Pocket wifi sits in the middle on price but adds a deposit, a daily rental and one more thing to charge. The eSIM starts at $5.04, turns on by itself, and there is nothing to return.

Once you arrive, set the MegaEsim line as your data line and switch on data roaming for that eSIM. The roaming toggle simply lets it connect to Celtiis. It does not trigger any extra charge, since your data is already paid for in the plan.

The plan and its days start counting from the moment it connects in Benin, not from when you bought it. So you can install early with no worry. If you run low during the trip, you can top up with another plan instead of going to find a shop.
