eSIM for Faroe Islands

Sort your data out before you leave. Buy your plan online, and you get a QR code by email. Scan it while you are still on your home wifi. Your phone saves the eSIM but does not start the clock yet. The plan only begins counting once you land and turn on data in the Faroes.

Check your phone first. An eSIM needs an iPhone 11 or newer, or an Android phone from around 2020 onward, and the phone must be carrier unlocked. If you are not sure, search your settings for the word eSIM. If it shows up, you are fine.

Doing this at home means you skip the airport SIM kiosk and the queue. You also avoid paying roaming fees the second your plane touches down.

Vágar Airport is the only airport in the Faroes, and it has solid Faroese Telecom coverage. As soon as you land and take your phone off airplane mode, go into your settings, pick the travel eSIM line, and switch Data Roaming on for that line. Roaming just tells the phone to use the local network. It does not cost extra with a travel eSIM.

Within a minute or two your phone connects to Faroese Telecom and you have 4G. Now you can pull up your rental car booking, message family, or load the road to Tórshavn. The drive from the airport runs through the long undersea tunnel to Streymoy, so set your route before you enter it.

Most trips here are short and active, so you do not need a huge plan. For a quick two or three day stop with maps, weather checks, and a few photos, the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $3.65 is plenty. It gives you room to spare without paying for data you will never touch.

For a full week of hiking, driving, and sharing photos, go a bit bigger. The 5 GB for 30 days plan at $6.09 fits a normal week well. If you stream video, back up lots of photos, or travel with one phone shared between two people, the 10 GB for 30 days plan at $11.12 is the safer pick.

Want to test things first without spending much? The 1 GB for 1 days plan at $1.50 is the cheapest way to try the network before you commit to more. Weather here changes fast, so checking the forecast often is normal, and that uses very little data.

Faroese Telecom reaches almost the whole country, so in Tórshavn, Klaksvík, Vestmanna, and the other towns you get a steady 4G signal. Driving the main roads between islands is mostly smooth too, since the network follows the populated routes.

The weak spots are the wild ones. Out on remote hiking trails, on the cliffs near Sørvágsvatn lake, or on the smaller outer islands, the signal can fade to slow data or drop for a while. Some of the long undersea tunnels also lose signal partway through. None of this is a flaw in the eSIM. It is just the land, with steep mountains and open ocean between villages.

Download offline maps before you head out for the day. Save the Faroes map in Google Maps while you are on a strong signal in town, and grab your trail in an app like AllTrails. Then a dead zone on a hike or in a tunnel does not leave you lost.

Watch your data with light habits. Photos cost almost nothing to take, but auto backup to the cloud over mobile data adds up fast, so set backups to wifi only. Most guesthouses, cafes, and the airport have free wifi, so save big downloads and video calls for those moments and let your plan handle maps and messages on the move.

If you see your data getting low halfway through a longer stay, you do not have to wait until it is gone. Buy another plan from your account and it stacks on. The 3 GB for 30 days plan at $3.89 is a good refill that carries you through the rest of a trip without much cost.

For a short top up on your final couple of days, the 1 GB for 7 days plan at $1.57 covers maps and messages right up to your flight. Keep a small buffer so you are never stuck offline when you need a booking or a map the most.

On your way out, you will pass back through Vágar Airport, where Faroese Telecom coverage stays strong, so checking in and pulling up your boarding pass is easy. Use the airport wifi for any large downloads and let your eSIM handle the quick stuff.

There is nothing to return and no SIM card to remove. A travel eSIM just stops working when the data or the days run out. If you have leftover days, keep the eSIM on your phone in case a flight delay means you need maps or messages a little longer. Once you are home, you can delete the eSIM from your settings whenever you like.
