eSIM for Russia

A travel eSIM bought before you fly is now the only realistic way for a visitor to get mobile data in Russia. Local SIMs require registration that takes days, and Western roaming mostly does not work there at all. Read that list again and picture doing it in your first jet lagged morning in Moscow. It is not a queue, it is a bureaucratic project that takes days. The quick airport SIM counter for tourists is gone. Every serious travel guide now says the same thing: sort your data out before you arrive.

Light users who mostly check maps and messages get by on 1 GB to 3 GB for a short stay. Most travelers who post photos, use ride apps, and browse daily land around 5 GB to 10 GB for a week or two. Heavy users who stream video or work online should look at 10 GB or more, or the 50 GB plan for long trips.

Compared with hunting for a local SIM card, which can mean a queue and paperwork, the eSIM is set up before you even board your flight. The cheapest plan starts at just $1.77, so it is easy to try a small one first and add more later if you need it.

Moscow has some of the best mobile coverage in the country. From Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports to Red Square, the Kremlin, and the metro stations deep underground, both Beeline and Tele2 give you steady 4G. You can pull up maps, book a taxi, and translate a menu without thinking about it.

The city is big and you will use data all day. For a few days of maps, messaging, and the odd video, the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $4.44 is a sensible pick. If you are staying longer or working from cafes, the 10 GB for 30 days plan at $13.50 gives you room to relax.

Saint Petersburg is just as well covered as Moscow. Walking along Nevsky Prospekt, queuing for the Hermitage, or taking a canal boat past the Church of the Spilled Blood, your phone stays connected on both local networks.

Most visitors pair Saint Petersburg with Moscow on the same trip. A single MegaEsim plan covers both cities, so you do not need to swap anything between them. For a week split across the two capitals, 5 GB for 30 days at $7.39 is a comfortable middle choice.

The Golden Ring is a loop of historic towns northeast of Moscow, including Suzdal, Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, and Yaroslavl. These places are smaller and quieter, but they still sit on good 4G. You will have data for navigation between towns, finding a guesthouse, and reading up on the old churches and monasteries.

Coverage holds up well in the town centers. On the roads in between you may notice it dip for a stretch, so download an offline map before you set out for the day.

Sochi has strong coverage all along the coast and through the city itself. Whether you are at the beach, in the Olympic Park, or wandering the seafront, Beeline and Tele2 keep you online.

If you head up into the Caucasus mountains behind Sochi, toward Krasnaya Polyana and the ski slopes, expect the signal to fade at higher altitude. This is normal in mountain terrain. Grab any directions or trail info before you go up.

Russia is more than its two capitals. Kazan with its blue and white Kremlin, Yekaterinburg on the edge of the Ural Mountains, Novosibirsk, and Nizhny Novgorod are all real cities with full 4G. Your data behaves the same way it does in Moscow once you are inside these urban areas.

For a trip that hops between a few regional cities over a couple of weeks, the 10 GB for 30 days plan at $13.50 is a good fit. It carries you through maps, ride apps, and a steady stream of messages without running thin.

A Trans-Siberian trip is the one place where coverage really changes. The big stops along the line, like Irkutsk near Lake Baikal, have solid 4G. Between those stops, as the train rolls across long empty stretches of Siberia, the signal often drops to slow data or nothing at all.

This is not a fault with your eSIM. It is simply how mobile coverage works across thousands of kilometers of forest and open land. Save maps, tickets, and anything you want to read while you still have signal at a station. For a long rail trip with heavy use, the 50 GB for 30 days plan at $58.38 means you are never counting megabytes.

Not every visit is a grand tour. If you are passing through on a short business trip or a one or two night stop, you do not need a big plan. The 1 GB for 1 days plan at $1.77 covers a quick arrival, and the 1 GB for 7 days plan at $1.87 stretches that same gigabyte across a week.

These light plans are best for maps, messaging, and email rather than video or heavy browsing. If you find yourself running low, you can simply buy another plan.

This surprises almost everyone: Airalo has not sold a Russia plan since 2022, and Saily has never offered one. If you search their sites for Russia you will come up empty. Old blog posts claiming otherwise are out of date. Of the well known brands, only a few still serve Russia, and their prices reflect the lack of competition: Nomad charges $25 for 10 GB, Holafly sells unlimited from about $7.90 a day, and smaller names like Yesim sit in between.

Mostly a dead end. Verizon and AT&T exclude Russia from their travel passes, and T-Mobile lists it as not eligible for international roaming benefits. Some European carriers still technically roam there at painful per megabyte rates. Treat roaming as unavailable and you will be planning correctly.

1. The 24 hour cooling off period. Since late 2025, any foreign SIM or eSIM connecting to a Russian network for the first time can have its mobile data blocked for up to 24 hours. It is a security measure and it applies to every roaming product, not just ours. Carriers send an SMS with a link to verify and unblock early, and it often clears faster. Plan for it: connect as soon as you land, keep your hotel wifi details handy for the first evening, and do not panic if data takes time to wake up. It comes right on its own.

2. Some apps are blocked. As of 2026, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and YouTube are blocked in Russia, and Telegram can be slow. Russians themselves use VPNs, and visitors do the same: install and test two or three VPN apps before you arrive, because the app stores may not cooperate once you are inside the country. Telegram remains the main messenger that partly works without help.

3. Mobile internet has off days. Russian cities sometimes switch mobile data off across whole districts for security reasons, occasionally for days. Wifi keeps working during these shutdowns, so cafes and hotels become everyone's internet. This affects every SIM and eSIM equally. It is simply how the country works right now, and knowing it in advance beats discovering it live.

None of this is a reason to skip the Hermitage. It is a reason to arrive prepared, with your eSIM installed, a VPN tested, and offline maps downloaded.
