eSIM for Chad

A normal SIM is the tiny plastic chip you push into your phone. An eSIM does the same job, but there is no plastic. It is a small chip already built inside your phone, and you load a data plan onto it from a file.

That means you never have to find a phone shop in N'Djamena or swap a card at the airport. You buy your Chad plan online, get a code, and add it to your phone. Your normal home SIM stays in place, so you keep your own number for calls and texts while the eSIM handles your data in Chad.

Most phones made in the last few years support eSIM. That includes iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy phones. If you are not sure, check the next section before you buy.

Two things must be true. First, your phone must support eSIM. Second, your phone must be unlocked, which means it is not tied to one home carrier. Most phones bought outright are already unlocked. If you bought yours on a payment plan from a carrier, ask them to confirm it is free to use other networks.

A quick way to check eSIM support on an iPhone is to open Settings, then Cellular, and look for an Add eSIM option. On Android, look under Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs. If you see an option to add a plan or a digital SIM, you are good to go.

Do this check at home, days before your flight. It is much easier to sort out a locked phone while you are still standing in your own kitchen than at the gate.

In Chad, the eSIM connects to the Airtel network, which has the widest reach in the country. How much data you buy depends on how you travel. Maps, messaging, and the odd email use very little. Video calls, social media, and streaming eat through data fast.

For a short two or three day stop in N'Djamena where you mostly check maps and chat, the 1 GB for 7 days plan at $5.04 is plenty. For a normal week long trip with daily map use, photos, and some social media, the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $13.44 is a comfortable fit. If you are staying a full month, working remotely, or sharing your connection, the 10 GB for 30 days plan at $44.80 gives you real breathing room.

There are also very short plans like 1 GB for 1 day at $4.54, which are handy if you just need to get online the moment you land and sort out a longer plan later. A simple rule: it is cheaper and calmer to buy a little extra than to run dry in the middle of a busy day.

After you buy, you get an email with a QR code. Do the install while you are still at home on your own WiFi, because you need an internet connection to load the plan. Installing it early does not use up your data. The clock on most plans starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Chad, not when you install it.

On an iPhone, open Settings, tap Cellular, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code, and point your camera at the code in the email. On Android, open Settings, go to Network and internet, tap SIMs or Add SIM, then Download a SIM instead, and scan the same code. Your phone will add the new plan in under a minute.

When the plan is added, give it a clear label like Chad Travel so you do not mix it up with your home line. Then leave it switched off until you arrive. You will turn it on in the next step.

Once you arrive, go into your phone settings and turn on the Chad eSIM for data. Then turn on Data Roaming for that line. This sounds scary, but roaming here just lets the eSIM talk to the Airtel network. You are using your prepaid plan, not paying expensive home roaming fees.

Set the eSIM as your data line and leave your home SIM for calls and texts only. To avoid surprise charges from your home carrier, turn off data roaming on your home line. Give it a minute or two to connect after you step off the plane at N'Djamena International Airport.

If nothing happens after a few minutes, turn airplane mode on and off, or restart the phone. That small reset fixes most first connection hiccups.

You will get the best and most stable signal in N'Djamena and in larger towns like Moundou, Sarh, and Abeche, where 4G is available. For city travel, ride apps, maps, and staying in touch, this works well.

Once you head into the countryside, expectations should change. Out toward Lake Chad, across the Sahara in the north, or on the long road south, coverage thins out and may drop to slower 3G or vanish in places. Remote spots like Zakouma National Park have little to no public mobile coverage, and most visitors reach the park by small plane anyway.

If your trip takes you far off the main routes, download your offline maps and any key documents while you are still on a strong city signal. For truly remote areas, no eSIM or local SIM will help, and serious expedition travelers often carry a satellite device.
