Do you need a travel eSIM for St Thomas, St John and St Croix?

Yes, our eSIM works in the US Virgin Islands, but if you have an American phone plan, check it first. The islands are a US territory, and your plan may treat them as domestic. For other visitors, a local data plan avoids home roaming charges. The British Virgin Islands next door are a separate territory.

01 Read this first if you are American

The US Virgin Islands are an unincorporated US territory that uses the US dollar, and T-Mobile US is among the operators serving the islands. If your US plan counts the USVI as domestic, you need no eSIM here. Check your carrier's coverage terms first; we would rather you did that than buy a plan you don't need.

If you are visiting from Canada, the UK, Europe or elsewhere, your phone roams here on your operator's international rates. Our plans start at $6.99 for 1 GB over 7 days.

02 Which networks cover the islands

The operators serving the islands include Liberty, Viya, Claro Puerto Rico and T-Mobile US, and the territory's tourism site says most carriers have signal in the USVI. The main towns are Charlotte Amalie on St Thomas, Christiansted and Frederiksted on St Croix, and Cruz Bay on St John.

More than half of St John is Virgin Islands National Park, managed by the National Park Service. Download an offline map before you set out on its trails, so your directions don't depend on a signal. Local numbers use area code 340.

03 Ferries, charters and the British Virgin Islands trap

Our plan for the US Virgin Islands does not cover the British Virgin Islands. Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke belong to the BVI, a British Overseas Territory. BVI Tourism lists daily ferries to Tortola from Charlotte Amalie, and from Red Hook and St John.

If your trip includes both, plan for both. And if you are chartering a boat, expect signal to fade as you move away from the islands, so download charts, bookings and playlists before you leave the dock.

04 Cruise days in Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie is a major cruise stop, and a port day is when a small data plan is most useful. Shore excursions run to fixed times, and a working map and group chat make it easier to get back to the ship on schedule.

Switch off data roaming on your home SIM before you sail, so a ship or port network can't bill you by surprise. Our guide to using an eSIM on a cruise ship explains what works at sea and in port.

05 Matching a plan to a port day or a week on St John

A cruise stop or a long weekend fits the 1 GB for 7 days plan at $6.99. A week across St Thomas and St John, with photos and navigation, suits the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $15.99. For longer stays there is 3 GB for 30 days at $15.99 or 5 GB for 30 days at $25.99.

Our plans are data only, with no local number. Calls and messages go over apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime, and your home SIM can stay on for texts with its data roaming switched off.

06 Using your phone for directions on island roads

Traffic keeps left across the US Virgin Islands, and the territory's tourism site says it is illegal to drive while using your phone. If you rely on your eSIM for directions, set the route before you pull away and bring an earpiece, as the tourism site suggests. The same site says a valid US or foreign licence is accepted for 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our U.S. Virgin Islands eSIM.

Maybe not. The USVI are a US territory, and your US plan may treat them as domestic, with no roaming charges. Check your carrier's coverage terms first, and only buy a plan if the islands are not included.

It joins a local network by itself once you switch the line on and turn on data roaming for it. Operators serving the islands include Liberty, Viya, Claro Puerto Rico and T-Mobile US.

No. Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke belong to the BVI, a British Overseas Territory with its own networks. Daily ferries run there from St Thomas and St John, but you need a separate plan for the BVI.
