Your Hong Kong eSIM, Stage by Stage: From Packing to Your Last Day

This guide walks you through each stage of the trip, from buying before you leave to running down the last of your data before you fly home.

01 Buy and load it on your phone before you fly

Set the eSIM up at home, days before your flight. You buy the plan, get a QR code by email, and add it to your phone while you still have your normal wifi. Nothing turns on yet. The plan only starts connecting once it finds the CMHK network in Hong Kong, so loading it early costs you nothing.

On an iPhone go to Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. On most Android phones go to Settings, then Connections, then SIM manager, then Add eSIM. Two quick checks before you do this. Your phone must support eSIM, and it must be carrier unlocked. Note that iPhones bought in Hong Kong use two physical SIM trays and do not take eSIMs, so a handset from somewhere else is what you want.

Doing this at home means that if anything looks wrong, you have time to fix it. Sorting out a phone problem from your kitchen is far easier than doing it while standing in the arrivals hall.

02 Pick the right amount of data for how you travel

03 Switch it on the minute you land at Chek Lap Kok
