eSIM for Hong Kong

No. This is the single most important thing on this page, and it is the question most people arriving here are really asking.

Hong Kong runs its own telecoms system, separate from the mainland. A Hong Kong plan covers Hong Kong. Cross into Shenzhen or fly to Beijing and it stops, in the same way a French plan stops at the Swiss border. If your trip includes both, you need coverage for both.

The reverse also catches people. A plan sold for China does not necessarily cover Hong Kong, because to a network they are separate places. Check what a plan covers by name rather than assuming the region is one market.

It does not affect Hong Kong. eSIM works normally here, both networks we use support it, and there is no restriction on a visitor using one.

The confusion is real though, because mainland China has historically made eSIM difficult for local consumer plans, and headlines about that get read as though they apply to the whole region. They do not. Hong Kong is a different regulatory environment with a different telecoms market.

If your trip is Hong Kong only, none of the mainland complications apply to you at any point.

Not for the reason people usually mean. The mainland internet restrictions do not apply in Hong Kong, so Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and the rest work normally here without one.

There is a separate reason you might notice something odd, and we would rather tell you than let you discover it. Our Hong Kong plans route their data out through Singapore. That means a streaming service, a bank app or a geo blocked site sees you as being in Singapore, not in Hong Kong.

• Normal browsing, maps, messaging and social: no difference at all
• Streaming: you may get the Singapore library rather than Hong Kong's, or your home one
• Banking apps: some are sensitive to the country they think you are in
• If you specifically need to appear to be in Hong Kong, a local SIM is the reliable answer

Almost no eSIM seller publishes where their traffic exits. We do, because it is the difference between a service working the way you expect and you spending an evening wondering why.

Hong Kong is one of the easiest places in the world to stay connected. It is dense, it is small, the MTR has coverage throughout, and 5G is widespread. Network choice matters far less here than in a large or mountainous country.

Which means the honest version is this: on a Hong Kong trip, any competent eSIM will work. What separates them is price and whether they tell you the things on this page.

Worked out on 21 September 2026. Hong Kong trips are usually short, so the 3 GB and 5 GB plans cover most of them. The 10 GB at $6.58 is worth it if you are working or using the city as a base for a longer stay in the region.

If you are arriving from outside Asia, yes, because roaming from a European, North American or Gulf contract is expensive and Hong Kong is a city where you will use maps and transport apps constantly.

If you are coming from mainland China, Japan, Korea or Southeast Asia on a regional plan, check whether Hong Kong is already included before buying anything. Plenty of Asia regional plans cover it, and paying twice helps nobody.

• Worth it: you will use the Airport Express, the MTR and maps constantly, which you will
• Probably not: you already hold an Asia regional plan that lists Hong Kong
• Probably not: a one night layover inside the airport, which has free wifi

Less than most destinations, because wifi is genuinely everywhere. Hotels, malls, cafes, the MTR and the airport all have it, and much of the city is walkable with it.

Most short Hong Kong trips finish well inside 3 GB. If you are unsure, the jump from 3 GB to 5 GB costs about a dollar and removes the question.

No. These are data plans, so no number and no calls or texts to a normal number. WhatsApp, Signal and FaceTime all work over the data.

Hong Kong is a place where this occasionally matters, because some restaurant bookings and delivery services want a local number. If that is part of your trip, a local prepaid SIM from a convenience store is cheap and widely available.

Keep your home SIM on for bank codes, with its own data roaming turned off.

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. The instinct to leave it off is backwards and it is the most common reason a working eSIM looks broken.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile on a Hong Kong partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming at all times. With the setting off it shows signal and moves no data. It is per line, so your home SIM is unaffected.

Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data with roaming on, home SIM on for texts with its data roaming off.

So install at home before you fly. This matters for Hong Kong specifically because a lot of visits are stopovers bolted onto a longer trip, and you do not want a plan burning days while you are still somewhere else.

The clock runs in calendar days from first connection rather than in 24 hour blocks.

On the MTR yes, throughout, including in the tunnels. Hong Kong's underground coverage is among the best anywhere and you can work on the train.

On Lantau, including at the Big Buddha and around the airport, yes. On Lamma, Cheung Chau and the other outlying islands, yes in the villages and along the ferry routes, with thinner patches on the hiking trails.

On the ferries themselves you will hold a signal for most of the crossing, since the distances are short and the coast is never far.

No. Macau is a separate place again, with its own networks, in exactly the way Hong Kong is separate from the mainland. A Hong Kong plan stops when the ferry docks.

A lot of visitors do Hong Kong and Macau in the same trip, so this is worth planning for. Buy a Macau plan as well and install both before you leave, then switch which line carries data after you arrive. It takes seconds and needs no signal.

If your trip is Hong Kong, Macau and the mainland, three separate coverages are needed, or a regional plan that names all three.

If your itinerary includes mainland China, do not buy this expecting it to cover both. It will not. Buy for each, or buy a regional plan that names them separately.

If you already hold an Asia regional plan, check whether Hong Kong is on its list before buying anything else.

We are not going to pretend network choice is the interesting part here. It is not. Any competent eSIM works in Hong Kong. What we think is worth your attention is that this plan does not cover mainland China or Macau, that Hong Kong has none of the mainland's internet restrictions, and that our traffic exits in Singapore, which is the bit that occasionally surprises people.
