French Polynesia is spread across more than a hundred islands, so a phone that works the second you land matters more here than in most places. This guide walks you through staying connected at every stage of the trip, from your couch at home to your last morning in the lagoon. The smartest move is to buy and install your eSIM days before you fly out. You install it while you still have your home WiFi, then leave it switched off until you arrive. Nothing starts counting until you turn on data in French Polynesia.
This matters more here than usual. Faa'a International Airport in Papeete has no free public WiFi, so if you wait until you land to sort out a connection, you will be stuck. Get it ready at home and you step off the plane already online.
Think about how you actually use your phone on holiday. A short stay where you only need maps, WhatsApp and the odd photo upload runs fine on a small plan. The 1 GB for 7 days plan at $18.06 covers a quiet week of light use.

Open your maps app first and check it loads. Send one message to let people know you arrived. Tahiti has strong 4G around Papeete and the coast, so this first connection is usually quick and solid.
Tahiti and nearby Moorea have the best coverage in the whole territory. Vini gives you reliable 4G along the coasts where almost all the hotels, ferries and restaurants are. Moorea, a short ferry ride from Papeete, has good signal across most of the island.
Coverage drops as you head inland and uphill. The mountain interiors and valleys can fall to a weak signal or none at all. Download any hiking maps or trail notes while you still have a strong connection near the coast.
Bora Bora has decent coverage in the main village and around the resort motus, but it is not flawless. Signal can get patchy near the mountain and along quieter stretches of the lagoon edge. Even where you have bars, island infrastructure means speeds top out fairly low, so do not expect city speed.
On more remote islands like Raiatea, Huahine, Tikehau and Rangiroa, you will usually still find Vini signal in the populated areas, just slower and thinner once you move away from the main settlements. Plan for messaging and maps to work and treat fast streaming as a bonus.
Resorts and many hotels offer WiFi, though it is often slow and sometimes paid by the night. Lean on that hotel WiFi for big jobs like backing up photos or downloading shows, and save your eSIM data for when you are out and about.
Set your maps to offline before you head out for the day. Turn off automatic photo and video backup over mobile data. These two habits alone can make a small plan last the whole trip.
