Best eSIM for Ethiopia

You can, but it is an errand rather than a download. Travellers describe going into an Ethio Telecom branch in person to have one issued, taking the ID they registered with, and finding that not every branch keeps eSIMs in stock. One traveller was pointed to a specific store because it was the one that reliably had them.

The people who get caught out hardest are those arriving with an eSIM only iPhone. A US iPhone 14 or later has no SIM tray at all, so there is no physical card to fall back on. If the branch you reach has no eSIM stock that day, you have no way to get online.

Practically, that means good service in Addis Ababa and the larger towns, and thinner coverage than Ethio Telecom in remote rural areas, where the state network has had decades of head start. Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Hawassa and Dire Dawa are well covered, as are the roads between them and Bole airport.

It thins out fast beyond that. The Simien Mountains, the Danakil Depression and the Omo Valley have long stretches with no usable signal on any Ethiopian network. Lalibela has service in town and patchy coverage around the rock hewn churches on the outskirts. Download offline maps before any of those trips and treat signal as a bonus.

Worth knowing separately: Ethiopia has a history of nationwide mobile internet shutdowns during unrest. No eSIM from any provider can work around that, because the networks themselves are switched off.
