eSIM for Mauritius

An eSIM is just a SIM card built into your phone. You cannot see it or hold it. Instead of putting a tiny plastic chip into a slot, you add the eSIM with a code on your screen.

That means no shop visit and no fiddling with a paperclip. You buy the plan online, your phone downloads it, and it connects to a local Mauritius network for you. In Mauritius our eSIM links up to the CHILI network, so your phone gets a real local signal the moment you arrive.

First, a quick check. Your phone needs to support eSIM and it must be carrier unlocked. Most iPhones from the XR and newer work fine, and so do recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models. If you are not sure, there is more on how to check further down.

When your plane lands at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in the south, your normal home plan will often switch to expensive roaming. A few maps and messages can cost a shocking amount.

With an eSIM you skip all of that. You set it up at home on your own wifi, and it switches on by itself when you reach Mauritius. You can order your taxi to Grand Baie or Flic en Flac before you even leave the terminal.

The airport does have free wifi called 3Hours@MauritiusAirport with no password. It is fine for a quick message, but it only lasts a few hours and it is slow. An eSIM keeps you online the whole trip, not just at the gate.

This is the question most people get wrong. They buy way too much. For maps, WhatsApp, a bit of social media and the odd video, most travelers use somewhere between 500 MB and 1 GB a day. Heavy video calls and streaming use more.

If you are on a short trip and your resort in Le Morne or Belle Mare has wifi, a small plan goes a long way. The 1 GB for 7 days plan at $3.15 suits a relaxed beach week where you mostly use hotel wifi and just need data when you are out and about.

Touring more? The 3 GB for 15 days plan at $8.40 covers two weeks of driving between Port Louis, Chamarel and Mahébourg with maps running. For a single busy day, like an arrival day full of bookings and navigation, the 1 GB for 1 days plan at $2.98 is a cheap way to get started.

Do this part at home, before your trip, while you have wifi. After you buy, you get a QR code by email. Keep your phone connected to wifi for all of these steps.

On an iPhone, open Settings, tap Mobile Service or Cellular, then tap Add eSIM. Choose to use a QR code and point your camera at the code from your email. On most Android phones, open Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM, and scan the same code.

Your phone may ask you to name the new line and pick which line to use for data. That is it. The plan is now installed. It will not start counting your days until it connects to CHILI in Mauritius, so installing early costs you nothing.

When you land, switch your phone off airplane mode. In your settings, make sure the Mauritius eSIM line is turned on and set as your data line. Then turn on data roaming for that line only. This sounds scary, but for a travel eSIM roaming just means it is allowed to use the local CHILI network. You will not be charged extra for it.

Give it a minute or two to find a signal. If nothing happens, toggle airplane mode on and off once, or restart the phone. That fixes it almost every time.

One handy tip. Keep your home SIM in the phone but switch off its data. That way you still get your normal calls and texts from home, while all your internet runs through the cheaper Mauritius eSIM.

Coverage in the busy spots is good. Port Louis, Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Le Morne, Mahébourg and the road from the airport all get a solid 4G signal. You will be fine for maps, calls and uploads in these areas.

It gets patchy in the quiet inland parts. On small roads across the central plateau, near remote viewpoints or deep in the sugarcane fields, the signal can drop. Download your offline map of the island before you set off on a road trip and you will not get stuck.

Compared with a physical tourist SIM bought at the airport, the eSIM saves you the queue and works the second you land. Compared with airport wifi or a rented pocket router, it is cheaper and you do not have to carry or return any extra gadget. For most visitors it is the simplest way to stay online.
