Verizon TravelPass: Worth $12 a Day?

Verizon TravelPass costs $12 a day in most of its 210 plus destinations, or $6 a day in Mexico and Canada. Each day gives you your normal number, unlimited talk and text, and 5 GB of high speed data, after which you are slowed to 3G speeds until the 24 hours resets. Whether that deal is worth it comes down to trip length, and the crossover point arrives faster than most people expect.

How TravelPass actually bills

A TravelPass day is not a calendar day. The clock starts the moment your phone touches a foreign network and runs 24 hours. Land in Paris at 11pm and check one message, that is a $12 day, and your next one starts at 11pm tomorrow. Days only bill when used, so a phone in airplane mode costs nothing. Verizon also sells a 3 TravelPass Days perk for $10 a month on Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus and Simplicity, and unused days keep for 12 months. Unlimited Ultimate already includes international data, talk and text, so it cannot take TravelPass at all. Check your plan on Verizon's TravelPass pages first, because either one changes the sums for a short trip.

The 5 GB daily high speed cap deserves attention too. Five gigabytes is plenty for a day of maps, messages and photos. It is not plenty for a family's phones hotspotting a tablet through one line, and 3G speeds afterwards are rough on anything beyond WhatsApp text.

The math on a real trip

Ten days in Italy on TravelPass: $120, assuming you use the phone every day, which on holiday you will. The same ten days on our Italy eSIM: 10 GB for 30 days at $5.99, or if you are careful with WiFi, 3 GB for 30 days at $2.24. TravelPass costs many times more for the convenience of changing nothing.

Mexico and Canada soften it, $6 a day there, and some Verizon plans include both countries free. For a Cancun week on a plan with Mexico included, TravelPass is unbeatable because you are not paying anything. Where TravelPass earns its $12

Short work trips where your number is your identity: nothing else is this frictionless. A two day client visit costs $24 and every call, text and email works exactly as at home.

Trips where the perk covers it: if your plan includes TravelPass days, use them, they are already yours. A travel eSIM only enters the conversation when the perk days run out.

Cruises: TravelPass does not work at sea, but Verizon sells a Cruise Daily Pass at $20 a day per line, with 0.5 GB at high speed. Land based travel eSIMs go quiet offshore, ours included, as we explain in our cruise eSIM guide. For sea days, carrier options and the ship's WiFi are the real choices.

Where it stops making sense

Every additional day past about day three is $12 buying convenience you already paid for on day one. Two weeks is $168. A month is $360. At that point you are funding a second phone bill that is larger than most people's first one. And because TravelPass rides your domestic plan, heavy use abroad can bump into the same deprioritisation rules as at home, so the unlimited on the label is the same unlimited you already know, we wrote about what that word really means in our guide to unlimited travel data.

Keep your number and skip the $12: the dual line setup

The choice is not TravelPass or nothing, because your phone runs two lines at once. Install a travel eSIM, point mobile data at it and switch data roaming off on the Verizon line. That stops background data, but not everything. Verizon says a session starts when you make or answer a call, send a text or use data, so one answered call or one sent text still costs $12. Verizon's own support account says received texts do not start a session.

No. A day bills only when the phone uses cellular service abroad. Airplane mode with WiFi on costs nothing, a legitimate trick for light days.

Is a travel eSIM cheaper than TravelPass?

Beyond two or three days, dramatically. Ten days of TravelPass is $120 against $5.99 for a 10 GB month long eSIM plan in Italy. TravelPass wins on very short trips and perk days. At sea, Verizon's Cruise Daily Pass works where a land eSIM does not.
