eSIM for Mexico

Ours reaches Telcel and AT&T Mexico, both on 5G. Telcel is the one that matters.

Telcel has the widest coverage in Mexico by a clear distance. It reaches into small towns, along the highways between cities and into parts of the country where the alternatives simply are not built. If you are going anywhere beyond the resort strips, being able to reach Telcel is the single most useful thing about a Mexican data plan.

AT&T Mexico is solid in the cities and the north. Having both means your phone takes whichever is stronger, and in practice on a trip through Yucatan, Oaxaca or Baja that will usually be Telcel.

In Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca city, Puerto Vallarta and along the main highways, yes, comfortably.

Outside those, it varies with how remote you go rather than how touristy the place is. The road to Bacalar is fine. The cenotes down dirt tracks are not. Mountain villages in Oaxaca and Chiapas thin out quickly, and parts of Baja between towns have long empty stretches on every network.

• Cancun, Playa, Tulum, Cozumel: strong throughout
• Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Oaxaca city: strong, 5G widely
• Highways between major cities: good, with occasional dips
• Cenotes, ruins down side roads, mountain villages: patchy, sometimes nothing
• Baja between towns and the Copper Canyon: expect long gaps on any network

Download offline maps before a driving day. Mexican road signage between small towns is not always generous and a blank map is worse than a blank signal.

Worked out on 21 September 2026. Data in Mexico costs more than in most countries, and that shows in these numbers. The 5 GB plan at $10.49 is the one we would point most holidays at, and it is the size where we are clearly the better buy.

Checked on 30 September 2026 in US dollars on Airalo's own Mexico page. We are going to give you the whole picture here rather than the flattering half of it.

Now the part most pages would leave out. Above 5 GB the advantage goes the other way. Airalo lists 10 GB for 30 days at $18.50 against ours, and 50 GB at $45.00 where ours is considerably more. If you need a large plan for Mexico, buy theirs. We would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong thing and lose you for good.

Airalo also sells Mexico plans that include calls and texts. We do not offer those for Mexico at all, so if you want a Mexican number that is another reason to look at them.

Prices move. Check both on the day you buy.

Not necessarily ours, and the honest answer depends on how much data you want.

At the small and middle sizes, one to five gigabytes, we are the cheaper option among the well known travel eSIMs. At ten gigabytes and above, several competitors including Airalo come in under us for Mexico specifically. Mexico is an expensive market for data and our pricing reflects that more than it does in, say, Japan or Indonesia.

There is also a genuinely cheap option that is not an eSIM at all. A Telcel prepaid SIM bought in an Oxxo, which is the convenience store on every other corner, costs very little and comes with generous data. It needs your passport and a few minutes of Spanish, and it is the best value in the country if you are staying a while.

If you are here for more than about three weeks: a Telcel prepaid SIM bought locally. Nothing beats it on price, and Telcel is the network you want anyway.

If you are here for a week or two: a travel eSIM, because the amount you save on a local SIM over that period is small and the convenience of landing connected is real. Cancun and Mexico City arrivals are busy and the taxi situation is much easier to handle with data.

If you need a Mexican phone number, for a rental, a tour operator or a bank: a local SIM, or one of the travel eSIMs that bundles calls and texts. Ours does not.

Coming from the US or Canada, check your own plan first. Several North American plans now include Mexico at no extra cost or for a small daily fee, and if yours does then buying anything else is money wasted.

Coming from Europe, the UK or further, yes, because Mexico sits well outside any roaming arrangement you hold and the standard rates are high.

• Worth it: arriving from Europe, the UK, Asia or the Gulf
• Worth it: a multi city trip where you will use maps and ride hailing constantly
• Worth it: arriving late at Cancun or Mexico City, where having data changes the taxi conversation
• Check first: US and Canadian plans, many of which already include Mexico
• Probably not: over three weeks, where a Telcel prepaid SIM from an Oxxo wins easily

A week of normal travel is 2 GB to 5 GB. Ride hailing and maps are the bulk of it, and Uber is widely used in Mexican cities.

That last row is deliberate. If your answer is ten gigabytes or more, go and compare before you buy, because Mexico is the one country on our site where we would not automatically expect to win.

No. These are data plans, so no number and no calls or texts to a normal number. WhatsApp is how Mexico communicates, for businesses as much as for people, and it works over the data.

WhatsApp genuinely covers most of it here. Restaurants, tour operators, drivers and rental hosts all use it. Where you may still need a number is a bank, a car hire deposit or a government form.

Keep your home SIM on for bank codes with its own data roaming switched off.

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. The instinct to leave it off is backwards and it is the most common reason a working eSIM looks broken.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile on a Mexican partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming permanently. With the setting off it shows signal and moves no data. It is per line, so your home SIM is unaffected.

Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data with roaming on, home SIM on for texts with its own roaming off.

• Check the phone: dial *#06# and look for an EID
• Open the QR code on a second screen or print it
• iPhone: Settings, then Mobile Service, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
• Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM
• Label it Mexico
• Set it as the line for mobile data and switch its data roaming on

On arrival at Cancun or Mexico City, allow a few minutes to register. If nothing happens, toggle airplane mode once, then check the eSIM line is selected for mobile data.

Keep the email. The profile cannot move to another phone and the code will not scan twice.

When the eSIM first connects to a Mexican network, not at purchase and not at install.

Install at home before you fly. Cancun arrivals in particular are busy, the queue for immigration is long, and the last thing you want is to be troubleshooting a profile in it.

The clock then runs in calendar days rather than 24 hour blocks from first use.

Yes, hotspot and tethering work on every Mexico plan here and come from the same allowance.

If you are working from Mexico rather than holidaying, this is another place where we would point you at comparing large plans properly, or at a Telcel prepaid SIM. Tethering a laptop for a month here is exactly the usage pattern where a local SIM wins outright.

If you want ten gigabytes or more, compare Airalo and others first. For Mexico specifically they are competitive above 5 GB and we would rather you bought the right thing.

If you are on a US or Canadian plan that already includes Mexico, you do not need us at all. Check before you spend anything.

If you are staying over three weeks, buy a Telcel SIM from an Oxxo with your passport. And if you need a Mexican phone number, this is not the product for that.

For a one or two week holiday, $10.49 for 5 GB over 30 days is a good buy and the size where we are clearly ahead of the better known names.

Mexico is the one country on our site where we will not claim to be the better option across the board. Above 5 GB the market is genuinely competitive and sometimes cheaper elsewhere, and for a long stay a Telcel prepaid SIM beats every travel eSIM including ours.

What we can say without hedging is that we reach Telcel, which is the network you actually want in Mexico, and that we will tell you when to buy from someone else. Most pages selling you a Mexico eSIM will do neither.
