eSIM for Mexico

The smart move is to install the eSIM at home, before you fly. You buy it, you get a QR code, and you scan it once. That saves the eSIM to your phone. It does not start using data yet. It just sits there ready.

While your flight is still on the runway in Mexico, or even in the air with the QR already scanned, you turn the line on in your phone settings and switch on data roaming for it. The moment the plane lands and you take it off airplane mode, you are online. No hunting for the airport WiFi password. No standing in a Telcel kiosk line at Cancun arrivals while your taxi waits.

The two airports most travelers land at are Cancun (CUN) and Mexico City (MEX). Both sit in areas with strong AT&T signal, so your phone should grab data within a minute of leaving airplane mode.

First thing to do once you have bars: open your ride app. DiDi and Uber both work well at Mexican airports and usually cost less than the taxi desks inside. Pull up your hotel address, check the going rate, and walk out to the pickup point already knowing what the trip should cost.

A good starter plan for the first day or two is the 1 GB for 1 day option at $2.10, or the 1 GB for 7 days at $2.17 if you want a full week of light use for almost the same money. That covers maps, messages, and ride apps while you settle in.

Be honest about how you use your phone. If you mostly check maps, send messages, and post a few photos, you are a light user. The 3 GB for 15 days plan at $6.29 fits a short trip like that nicely.

On the AT&T network you will get reliable, fast data across the big cities and the main tourist corridors. Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puerto Vallarta, and Oaxaca city all have strong service.

Signal can thin out once you leave the highways and head into small villages, deep jungle, or remote mountain roads. If you are driving the back roads in Chiapas or the Sierra, or visiting tiny pueblos far from the coast, expect some dead spots. This is true of every network in those areas, not just this one.

For the ruins, you will usually have signal at popular sites like Chichen Itza and the Tulum ruins. At more remote spots deep in the jungle, download your offline map before you go.

Mexico is big, and a lot of trips hop between places. The Riviera Maya run from Cancun down to Tulum, the flight or bus hop to Mexico City, a side trip to Oaxaca, or the Pacific stretch around Puerto Vallarta are all common routes.

The good part is your eSIM follows you. It is one plan for the whole country, so you do not buy a new card in each town or pay extra crossing state lines. On a long bus ride, like the ADO buses between cities, you will keep signal most of the way along the main highways and lose it only in the emptier stretches.
