SIM card at Heathrow or a UK eSIM first

Heathrow SIM counters by terminal with hours and dated prices, how to install a UK eSIM before you land, and why UK plans stop at the Isle of Man.

Your flight lands at Heathrow in two weeks and your home plan charges silly money abroad. You have read that the terminal has SIM shops and vending machines, and that one traveller walked out with a SIM that did nothing until an EE shop sold a data bundle on top. If the trip also takes in Belfast, the Isle of Man or a weekend in Jersey, the answer changes again, and none of the airport pages mention it.

Two things decide it: whether your phone takes an eSIM, and whether you leave Great Britain at any point.

The short version: install before you land, buy at Heathrow only if you must

If your phone takes an eSIM, install one at home, leave it off, and turn it on when the seatbelt sign goes. You skip the queue, the markup and the bundle question. Its unlimited option gives up to 1 GB per day at full speed, then up to 1 Mbps for the rest of that day.

If your phone only takes a physical SIM, Heathrow is a fine place to buy one, provided you pay for a bundle and test it before you walk off. Expect two to three times the supermarket price. And if the trip crosses into Ireland or reaches the Isle of Man, Jersey or Guernsey, a plan labelled UK does not follow you there.

Where the SIM counters are at Heathrow, terminal by terminal

Sim Local is the main seller, and Heathrow's shop listing counts 11 stores across four terminals. Its locations page, read on 14 September 2026, gives the hours below. Every staffed store closes at night. Only the two self service kiosks run around the clock, whatever other guides say about 24 hour shops.

WHSmith, Travelex and WeKnow desks in arrivals sell packs too, WeKnow with staff who fit the SIM. Vending machines, stocked with Lycamobile, EE and Three as listed by Traveltomtom in January 2025, have been there since Sim Local installed the first in the T3 landside hall in December 2016.

In transit without clearing passport control, you cannot reach the staffed stores, which sit landside or in the baggage halls. The only airside option is a self service eSIM kiosk in departures, at T2B Gate 38, T3 Pier 5, T4 Victor Pier Gate 22 or T5 Satellite C. Sim Local opened those on 18 July 2024, card only.

How much does a SIM card cost at the airport?

Nobody publishes a live shelf price, so here is every dated figure we could find. A traveller on r/uktravel paid £25 for an EE SIM with 30 GB for 30 days at WHSmith in April 2025. Alison Fay's guide, updated 18 August 2026, listed Lyca 20 GB at £25, EE 30 GB at £30 and Three unlimited at £50. London Travel Geek put airport bundles at £35 to £45 on 1 August 2026. A supermarket pack, it added, is £10 to £15.

The £20 Travelex deal for 100 GB that Google keeps surfacing comes from Traveltomtom's table dated 14 January 2025; no 2026 report repeats it. On the high street, read on 14 September 2026, Lycamobile charges £5 for 30 GB or £12.50 for unlimited over 30 days and giffgaff £10 for 15 GB. Sim Local's own website that day listed an EE 30 GB pack at US$20; the counter prices in the reports above run higher.

The markup buys a person who fits the SIM, picks the bundle and hands the phone back working. A Rick Steves forum poster in April 2025 had Sim Local at T2 do it "in less than two minutes". Worth £15 when you land tired with a physical SIM phone, worth nothing against an eSIM installed at home.

The SIM with no bundle trap, and the test before you leave the counter

A UK pay as you go SIM is not a data plan. It is a blank account, and the data comes from a bundle bought on top; Vodafone's own terms say that without a Big Value Bundle the SIM cannot call, text or use data. The r/uktravel poster from April 2025 hit exactly that at Gatwick: the clerk said it works, the hotel proved otherwise, and an EE shop sold them the missing data package. Traveltomtom's author got a dead WHSmith SIM at Heathrow and waited four days for a refund.

Credit is not data A pay as you go SIM with £20 of credit and no bundle shows full signal and loads nothing. Ask for the bundle by name and watch it activate.

Ask for a pack with data by name, for example 30 GB for 30 days, not credit you still have to spend.
Fit the SIM at the counter. Bring your own ejector tool; it was the most upvoted advice on the r/uktravel thread.
Turn Wi-Fi off, wait for the network name, then open Maps and search for your hotel.
Keep the receipt and the SIM's card. If it fails at the hotel, the refund runs through the seller, not the network.

Can a foreigner buy a UK eSIM before flying?

Yes. By September 2026 EE, O2, Lycamobile, giffgaff, Lebara, iD and Smarty all issued prepaid eSIMs. The cleanest operator option is EE's Travel eSIM for visitors, read on 14 September 2026: data only, no UK address needed, unlimited data, £5 for one day, £15 for seven and £30 for 30 days. You have 90 days to start it and a locked phone will not connect. The page says nothing about the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, Ireland or the EU, so assume it stops at the UK coast.

Lycamobile sells its £12.50 unlimited 30 day plan with instant eSIM activation, which is what the original poster on r/uktravel settled on in 2025. The same poster found Vodafone would not accept a foreign billing address, and a March 2025 thread on r/AmericanExpatsUK reported that O2 wanted a UK bank account.

Turn off auto renewal Lycamobile and other UK operator eSIMs renew every 30 days by default. Travellers on r/uktravel and r/eSIMs remove the payment card the day they buy.

Heathrow's own page promises "Heathrow's free eSIM" from Sim Local, its eSIM partner since 9 January 2026. The link lands on Sim Local's normal plan page, where the UK 20 GB plan started from £10 on 14 September 2026. The profile is free. The data is not.

Free Wi-Fi for the install Heathrow's free network, called Heathrow Wi-Fi, needs a quick registration. It is enough to pull an eSIM profile if you left the download until landing.

Do I need a passport or ID to buy a UK SIM?

We found no rule that says so, although three of the airport guides on Google's first pages tell you to have a passport ready. A UK resident on Quora says no documents are needed for pay as you go, and Too Many Adapters wrote on 7 September 2026 that nobody asked for any. EE sells its visitor eSIM with no UK address. We did not find a regulator page either way. A shop may still ask, and the passport costs nothing to carry.

Old phone with no eSIM? 3G is gone, so check what you are carrying

Ofcom confirms that 3G networks in the UK are now switched off. 2G stays until EE, O2 and Vodafone retire it between May 2029 and 2030, and Three never had it. A phone from before 4G can still call and text over 2G, but it gets no mobile data on any UK SIM. You need an unlocked phone with 4G. Northern Ireland and the Irish border: where a UK plan can drop out

The border between Northern Ireland and the Republic has no checkpoint, but it has two sets of masts. Ofcom's March 2024 statement on roaming cites Consumer Council research: 22% of customers in Northern Ireland had roamed onto Irish networks by accident in the preceding 12 months. Ofcom's consumer page warns anyone near that border to expect it.

For a UK operator SIM this is mostly an annoyance; Three, Vodafone, EE and O2 all let standard plans use Ireland at no extra charge, some with fair use caps. For a UK only travel eSIM it is a dead phone. That plan has no Irish partner network, so if your handset picks an Irish mast in County Down or outside Derry, data simply stops until it drifts back. The fix is the plan, not a setting: our Europe eSIM covers 34 countries including both the United Kingdom and Ireland, so whichever mast wins, you stay on a partner network. Stuck on a UK plan and forced to cross? Vodafone's advice is to set the network manually to the country you are in, then change it again on each hop.

Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are not the UK for your data plan

The UK Government's Crown Dependencies fact sheet from February 2020 states that Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are not part of the UK. The Isle of Man Government adds that the island has never been in the EU either. All three sit inside the Common Travel Area, so you walk off the ferry with no immigration check and assume the phone plan came with you.

It did not. No UK operator runs its own network there. A UK SIM roams onto Manx Telecom or Sure on the Isle of Man and onto JT, Sure or Airtel Vodafone in the Channel Islands, on your operator's terms. A travel eSIM is worse off: a trusted contributor on r/eSIMs wrote in June 2026 that most UK or Europe options do not include the Isle of Man.

That includes us. Our UK plan, our UK Number plan and our 34 country Europe plan do not cover the Isle of Man, Jersey or Guernsey. The Europe list has the United Kingdom and Ireland but none of the three.

The Isle of Man plan, on the network named on its page, is $1.74 for 1 GB over 7 days or $18.06 for 20 GB. Guernsey runs on Sure from $3.92 for 1 GB over 7 days or $47.31 for 20 GB.

For Guernsey, or a long island stay, a local SIM wins on price. JT sells an island eSIM to anyone by emailed QR code, 5 GB from £5 or 20 GB from £10 for 30 days, covering Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark. Sure's pages would not load for us.

Can I use my UK mobile in the Isle of Man or Jersey?

It depends on the network and whether you are pay monthly or pay as you go, and the answers online get it wrong both ways. One 2024 forum thread says UK SIMs need no special arrangements on the Isle of Man; that would cost a giffgaff user about £200 a gigabyte. Other pages say most UK SIMs incur roaming charges there; Vodafone includes the island on every plan and Three charges nothing per day. This is what each operator's own page said on 14 September 2026.

The giffgaff help page is blunt that the three islands sit outside its EU allowance. Manx Telecom tells visitors to select its network manually if the phone does not connect, and warns that UK operators may suspend a SIM that roams for more than about 60 days. Three adds one condition for pay as you go: the SIM must have been used in the UK first, with an active Data Pack.

The install before you fly plan for a mixed trip

Put the pieces together a week before departure, not in the baggage hall.

England, Scotland and Wales only: the UK plan, from $1.29 for 1 GB over 7 days up to 50 GB for 30 days at $23.80.
Anything that touches Northern Ireland or the Republic: the Europe plan, from $1.99 for 1 GB over 7 days to 50 GB for 30 days at $33.99, covering the UK, Ireland, France and Turkey. Its unlimited plans, from $1.29 a day with up to 1 GB per day at full speed then up to 1 Mbps, use a different 35 country area that excludes France and Turkey, so London plus Paris on unlimited stops at the Channel.
Isle of Man, Jersey or Guernsey: the separate island plan for each, JT's island eSIM, or a Manx Telecom top up. Nothing labelled UK or Europe will carry you.
Need a UK number: the UK Number plans, 30 GB for $16.99 or 200 GB for $35.99, work inside the United Kingdom only; calls, texts and data all stop when you leave.

Install everything at home over Wi-Fi, keep the travel line off until you land, and switch data roaming on for the travel line only. Our post on data roaming on or off has the exact toggles. Then the only thing Heathrow has to sell you is a coffee.

How much does a SIM card cost at Heathrow Airport?

Between £25 and £50 for a 30 day pack in every dated report from 2025 and 2026. EE 30 GB was £25 at WHSmith in April 2025; Lyca 20 GB was £25 and Three unlimited £50 in August 2026. The same networks cost £5 to £15 in a supermarket or online; the airport price includes staff fitting the SIM.

Can I use my UK mobile in the Isle of Man?

Only on your operator's terms, because the island is not part of the UK. Three charges nothing per day with a 12 GB fair use limit and Vodafone includes it in Zone A. O2 pay monthly includes it up to 25 GB, EE pay as you go charges £2.50 a day, and giffgaff 20p per megabyte. UK travel eSIM plans do not cover it.

Can I use my UK mobile in Jersey?

Jersey follows the Isle of Man pattern. Three adds no daily charge with a 12 GB fair use limit, and EE treats it as EU at £2.50 a day on pay as you go. O2 pay monthly includes it, and giffgaff bills 20p per megabyte. Vodafone does not list Jersey in Zone A. No UK or Europe travel eSIM covers it.

Do I need a passport or ID to buy a UK SIM card?

We found no legal requirement for pay as you go. UK residents and a travel blog updated in September 2026 report buying without showing anything, and EE sells its visitor eSIM with no UK address. Some airport blogs say a passport is mandatory, but nothing we read supports that. A shop can still ask, so keep it handy.

Which eSIM works on the Isle of Man?

What are the downsides of using an eSIM in the UK?

Your phone must be unlocked and eSIM capable, so older or contract locked handsets are out. Data only plans give you no UK number for calls or texts. Several UK operator eSIMs switch on auto renewal, so remove the payment card when you are done. And UK and Europe plans stop at the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
