Barajas and El Prat both sell SIM cards in arrivals. Whether that is the right way to get online in Spain depends on where you are from, how long you are staying, and whether you fancy doing paperwork after a flight.
Which networks operate in Spain
Four national networks: Movistar, Orange Spain, Vodafone Spain and Yoigo. Movistar has the deepest rural coverage, a legacy of being the former state operator. Orange and Vodafone are strong in the cities and along the coasts.
Spain has some of the best mobile coverage in Europe. 5G is live across Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Malaga and Bilbao, and 4G reaches almost everywhere people live.
Where the SIM desks are
Madrid Barajas, MAD, has operator points in the arrivals areas of several terminals, past baggage reclaim. Barcelona El Prat, BCN, is the same. Malaga, Alicante and Palma all have provision too, which matters because those are the holiday airports.
The catch is the same everywhere: the desks are after customs, so for the whole stretch of arrival where data would actually be useful, you do not have any.
Skip the vending machineVending machines look like the fast option and are not. You still have to register the SIM to an identified person afterwards, so the machine has saved you the queue but not the paperwork.
The registration rule
Spain requires prepaid SIM cards to be registered to a named, identified person. You hand over your passport, somebody types your details in, and you wait.
This is not a Spanish quirk, it is common across Europe and applies in Portugal, Italy and elsewhere. It simply costs time at the end of a long day.

The Canary Islands question
This one catches people out more than anything else about Spanish data, so it is worth being clear.
The Canary Islands are part of Spain for mobile purposes. A Spanish SIM or a Spain eSIM works in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura with no extra purchase, even though the islands sit off the coast of Africa and feel like a separate destination.
The same is true of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. One Spain plan covers the mainland and both island groups.
Island coverageCoverage is strong in the resort areas and towns of both island groups. It thins on the volcanic interior of Tenerife around Teide, and on the hiking routes of La Gomera and La Palma. Download offline maps before you walk.
Walking the Camino?
If you are walking the Camino de Santiago, think about the route before you buy a Spain only plan.
The Camino Frances stays in Spain and a Spain plan is fine. The Camino Portugues starts in Portugal and finishes in Santiago de Compostela, so a Spain only plan leaves you without data for the first half.
A regional Europe plan covers both countries on one profile and costs less than buying two country plans. Coverage along the Frances is good in the towns and patchy on the meseta between Burgos and Leon, so download each stage in the morning while you still have signal.
When the local SIM is still right
- Your phone cannot take an eSIM. Generally anything before 2019.
- You need a Spanish number. For a long stay, a rental, a Spanish bank, or any service sending codes to a local number.
- You are staying months. A proper Spanish contract beats any travel product over that period.
The alternative: land already connected
An eSIM installs at home over your own WiFi before you fly, sits switched off until you arrive, then connects to a Spanish network while you are still taxiing. You clear customs with maps and your booking already loaded.
