Out in the national parks it is a different story. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga, Murchison Falls, and Queen Elizabeth National Park have patchy coverage at best, and deep in the forest during a gorilla trek you should expect no signal at all. Download your maps, booking details, and anything you need offline while you are still in town. Many safari lodges have their own wifi, so you can catch up in the evening even when the trail had no bars.

Install it at home on wifi a day or two before you fly. After you buy, you get a QR code. On an iPhone open Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. On most Android phones open Settings, then Network or Connections, then SIM manager, and add an eSIM by scanning. Your phone saves the Uganda line next to your normal one.

Keep the Uganda line switched off until you arrive. When you land in Uganda, go back into your settings, turn on the Uganda data line, set it as your data plan, and switch on data roaming for that line. That last step sounds odd but it is normal for a travel eSIM and it does not cost extra. Within a minute you should see signal and you are ready to go.

A local Airtel or MTN SIM bought in Uganda can be cheap, but it takes time. You need your passport, you have to register the SIM in person, and you may wait in line after a long flight. You also have to swap out your home SIM and keep track of the tiny tray card.
