eSIM for Ecuador

Your eSIM connects to Movistar inside Ecuador. Movistar is one of the country's biggest carriers and it is known for being fast in the cities. You do not need to pick a network or change any setting. When you turn the eSIM on, your phone finds Movistar on its own.

Because it is a real local network and not a roaming partner, your data routes through Ecuadorian towers. That keeps speeds higher and lag lower than the old style of foreign roaming.

In the big cities the 4G is solid. Travelers usually see around 15 to 25 Mbps in Quito and Guayaquil. That is plenty for maps, ride apps like Uber and Cabify, video calls, and streaming a show on the bus.

Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca all have strong, steady coverage. Tourist hubs like Baños and the historic centers hold a good signal too. You can post photos, check WhatsApp, and pull up directions without much waiting.

Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito has a strong Movistar signal right at the gates. Jose Joaquin de Olmedo Airport in Guayaquil is the same. As soon as you switch your line on, your data should connect in under a minute.

A smart move is to install the eSIM at home while you still have wifi, then flip on the data line once you reach the airport. By the time you finish at the baggage belt, your maps and ride app are already working.

Beach towns like Montañita, Salinas and Manta get good 4G near the center and the boardwalk. The main roads between cities, such as the route from Quito down to the coast, hold a usable signal most of the way.

You may see the signal dip to 3G on long stretches between towns or in deep valleys. That is normal for any network here. Maps and messages still go through, but a heavy video may pause for a moment.

The Oriente, Ecuador's Amazon region, has the weakest coverage in the country. Lodges deep in the rainforest near Tena, Coca or the Cuyabeno reserve often have little or no mobile data. Remote highland trails and the slopes above villages can drop out too.

Plan for this before you go. Download your offline Google Maps area, your tickets, and any translation files while you are still on a strong city signal. That way a dead zone does not leave you stuck.

The Galápagos sit about 1,000 km off the mainland and coverage there is limited. You can pick up a signal in the main towns, Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal, but it is slower than on the continent.

Out on boat tours, snorkeling trips and the wilder islands, expect no signal at all. If most of your trip is in the islands, treat mobile data as a bonus, not your main lifeline, and lean on hotel wifi when you have it.

Light users who mostly check maps, WhatsApp and email do fine with a small plan. The 1 GB for 7 days plan at $2.84 is a good match for a short city break. Need just a day of backup? The 1 GB for 1 day plan is $2.94.

For a week or two of normal use with some streaming and photo uploads, step up to the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $7.56 or the 3 GB for 30 days plan at $8.02. Heavy users who stream a lot, work on the road, or share a hotspot should look at the 5 GB for 30 days at $12.60 or the 10 GB for 30 days at $20.85.

If you run low, you can buy another plan instead of guessing high on day one. Starting small and topping up keeps your cost down.

First check your phone supports eSIM. Most iPhones from the XR onward and recent Samsung, Google Pixel and other Android phones do. Your phone also needs to be carrier unlocked.

After you buy, you get a QR code by email. On iPhone go to Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. On Android open Settings, then Network, then add a SIM or eSIM and scan. Do this on wifi before your flight.

When you land in Ecuador, set the new eSIM as your data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. That switch is what lets it use the Movistar network. Your home number stays on your main SIM for calls and texts.
