Yes, an eSIM works in Croatia. Ours runs on Telemach with 5G and on A1 with 4G, and Telemach is the network our plan page still lists by its old name, Tele2. The coast brings two things to plan for: a short stretch of Bosnian shoreline at Neum, and ferries that let you board with a ticket on your phone.
Because Tele2 Croatia was renamed Telemach Hrvatska on 3 November 2020, and our catalogue still uses the old name. It is the same network. On our plan, Telemach carries 5G, while A1, the second network we use, is listed with 4G, so expect 4G whenever your phone sits on A1.
A1 changed its name too. It was called Vipnet until 1 October 2018. Hrvatski Telekom is not part of our plan, so if you ever choose a network by hand, pick Telemach or A1.
Use the coverage maps from HAKOM, Croatia's telecoms regulator. They show mobile coverage for A1, Hrvatski Telekom and Telemach from 2G up to 5G. Data and calls have separate layers, graded from poor or no signal up to very good.
Select A1 or Telemach, since those two carry our plan, and look at the data layer for the exact place you are booking. It takes a minute and is worth doing before a stay on one of the outer islands. HAKOM also runs HAKOMetar Plus, where you can report spots where real coverage differs from the map.
Take the Pelješac Bridge if you want to stay in Croatia the whole way. It opened on 26 July 2022 and lets you drive from Split to Dubrovnik without leaving the country. The older coast road passes through Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum, with two border checks within about 9 km.
Our Croatia plan only uses Croatian networks, so if your phone picks up a Bosnian mast around Neum, data stops until you are back in Croatia. The bigger risk is your home SIM. Leave its data roaming off, because Bosnia is outside the EU and charges there can be much higher. We cover the other Balkan borders in where Europe eSIMs stop in the Balkans.
Yes. Jadrolinija sells tickets on its website and says that to board, you only need to present the ticket stored on your mobile device. Save it on the phone before you reach the port, so boarding does not depend on the signal at the quay.
Most coastal holidays fit a fixed plan, and the 50 GB plan for 180 days suits anyone staying for the season. If you would rather not count megabytes, the unlimited plans give full speed up to 1 GB or 3 GB a day, then up to 1 Mbps.
