eSIM for Burkina Faso

Buy and install your eSIM at home while you still have your normal internet. You install it once, then leave it switched off until you arrive. That way it costs you nothing while you wait for your flight.

If nothing connects, restart your phone. That one step fixes most first time issues. There is some free airport WiFi, but it is slow and crowded, so your own data is the better bet from the start.

Ouagadougou is where Orange coverage is strongest. Around the city center, the big markets, and out toward the airport you should get steady 4G for maps, ride apps, and calls over the internet.

Like any busy capital, the network can slow down in crowded spots at peak times. If a page stalls in a packed market or a full restaurant, wait a few seconds or move a short distance and it usually picks back up.

The main highway from Ouagadougou to Bobo-Dioulasso, the country's second city, keeps decent signal along most of the route. You can follow your map and send messages for much of the drive, though signal can drop in the gaps between towns.

Bobo-Dioulasso itself has reliable Orange coverage in town. So do the tourist areas near Banfora, the gateway to the Cascades region. Plan a little for the road, since travel days eat more data than days spent in one place.

Cities and main towns are well covered, but the picture changes once you leave them. Out at the Karfiguela Waterfalls, the Sindou Peaks, and on quieter back roads, you may drop to a slower 2G connection or lose signal for stretches.

The north and east of the country have the weakest coverage of all. If you are heading to remote areas, download your offline maps and any important documents while you still have a strong signal in town. Then you are covered even when the bars disappear.

A local Orange SIM bought in country can cost less per gigabyte. The catch is the effort. You have to find an official store, show your passport, register the SIM, and get it set up, often in French. That eats into your first day.
