Nomad eSIM Not Working? How to Fix It

A Nomad eSIM that will not connect is almost always fixable in under five minutes, and the fix is almost never reinstalling. Work through these checks in order, they are sequenced from most common cause to least, and the first three resolve the large majority of cases. This guide genuinely aims to get your Nomad plan working, whoever you bought it from matters less than getting you online.

Check 1: is mobile data set to the Nomad line?

Installing an eSIM does not make the phone use it. On iPhone, Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data, and confirm the Nomad eSIM is selected. On Android, Settings, Network and Internet, SIMs, and set the Nomad line as the data SIM. The installed but never selected eSIM is the single most common not working report across every brand, and it looks exactly like a dead plan: full signal bars on your home line, nothing loading.

Check 2: is data roaming on for that line?

Travel eSIMs work by roaming, so the Nomad line needs its own Data Roaming toggle switched on, this is safe, the plan is prepaid. On iPhone the toggle lives inside the line's settings, on Android under the eSIM's roaming setting. If you were being careful and switched roaming off before flying, you switched it off for the wrong line half the time, check both lines while you are there: home SIM roaming off, Nomad roaming on. Check 3: the airplane mode reset

Ten seconds of airplane mode forces the phone to renegotiate with the local network from scratch, which clears the stale state that a long flight and an eager phone accumulate. Toggle it on, count to ten, toggle it off, give it a minute. Undignified, effective, free. A full restart is the stronger version if airplane mode does not do it.

Check 4: has the plan actually started, or already ended?

Open the Nomad app and look at the plan's status. Three states cause confusion. Not yet activated: some Nomad plans start on first network connection, others on a fixed date chosen at purchase, and a plan set to start tomorrow will not connect today. Data exhausted: the app shows remaining balance, and zero explains everything. Expired: validity windows are hard stops. The app answers all three in one glance, which beats an hour of settings archaeology. If the app shows the plan active with data remaining, continue down the list.

Check 5: select the network manually

Phones sometimes cling to a network the plan does not include, especially after crossing a land border. Settings, Cellular, the Nomad line, Network Selection, switch off Automatic, and wait for the list. Try the networks Nomad's app or purchase email names for your country, one at a time, giving each a minute. If a network connects and then drops repeatedly, try the next one on the list rather than fighting it, coverage agreements differ city by city.

Check 6: check the APN

The APN is the doorway between phone and network, and a missing one means signal bars with no internet, the most maddening symptom of all. The Nomad app shows the correct APN for your plan, compare it against Settings, Cellular, the Nomad line, Cellular Data Network on iPhone, or Access Point Names on Android. If they differ, type in what the app says exactly, lower case matters. Most installs set this automatically, the exceptions keep support teams employed.

Check 7: throttled, not broken?

If things load but painfully, you may be meeting a policy rather than a fault. Nomad's unlimited plans throttle to 512 kbps once the daily high speed allocation is spent, their own terms say so, and 512 kbps feels broken if you expected 4G. The tell: messaging works, images crawl, video refuses. Nothing on the phone fixes a throttle, it resets with the plan's daily cycle. Check 8: is the phone unlocked?

A carrier locked phone can download an eSIM profile and then refuse to connect it, a failure that hides behind every other symptom on this list. Settings, General, About, Carrier Lock on iPhone, where anything other than No SIM Restrictions means locked. The two minute check and the carrier by carrier unlock routes are in our unlock guide. Check 9: reinstalling, the genuinely last resort

Only after everything above, and only with Nomad support's blessing. Deleting the profile without their say so risks the remaining balance, most travel eSIM codes are single use, and support can see server side whether a reissue is needed. Message them through the app with your ICCID, the plan name, and what you have tried, the list above doubles as exactly the diagnostic report they will ask for.

In order of likelihood: mobile data is not set to the Nomad line, its data roaming is off, the phone needs an airplane mode reset, or the plan has not started or has run out, all checkable in two minutes between settings and the Nomad app.

Why is my Nomad eSIM so slow?

If you are on an unlimited plan, you have likely passed the daily high speed allocation and been throttled to 512 kbps until the daily reset. If a fixed plan is slow, manual network selection onto a different partner network usually helps.

Should I delete and reinstall my Nomad eSIM?

Not without contacting Nomad support first. Travel eSIM QR codes are generally single use, and deleting an active profile can destroy the remaining balance rather than fix the connection.
